Okay, this in general is a question for anyone computer savvy-

But this problem started after I've started getting back into recording.

Randomly, my sound will stop working - and when I check in my control panel, it says no sound device.

Now, this happens occasionally when I unplug my fasttrack pro. Usually it will switch back to my internal soundcard - but sometimes it won't.

But for a while now - it will happen randomly. I've booted up, and done nothing but come on this forum for about 2 hours now - and suddenly no sound. No sound device- (haven't had anything plugged in recording wise)

The only way I can fix this is to restart my computer - which isn't a huge deal (if there is a way to switch back to my internal sound card manually that would be better)

But I want to get to the root of the problem. It doesn't make sense to me why this randomly happens.

So right click that loudspeaker symbol at the bottom right of your screen and choose which soundcard yo want as your default.
Note: That has absolutely no bearing on what your soundcard will be for your DAWs.
Completely independent.

If things are ramdomly disappearing, it sounds like you have a low-level problem with your OS.

You should consider wiping the drive and reinstalling everything from scratch
(a pain, yes, but if you want to solve the problem.....)

right clicking it doesn't do anything but bring up a "What is this".

I can't seem to find anywhere to change my device manually.

You might be able to disregard this whole post; I don't think it really solves your problem after I reread your first post... But it's here in case you want to read it anyway.

What operating system are you using?

Under Windows 7, you should be able to right click the icon and pick "Playback devices," then right click whichever one is your internal sound card and pick "Set as Default Device."

Under Windows XP, find "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the control panel (under "Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices" in category view). Go to the "Audio" tab and find your internal sound card on the Sound playback Default device drop-down box (the first one).

(I'm sorry, I like to parenthetically over-clarify things without actually clarifying anything at all.)

the fast track pro is a USB device and USB can get flaky when it comes to power, try the following...

1. go to Control Panel > System> Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers
2. determine which USB Root Hub the FTP is using, right-click each Hub and choose Properties, check the Power tab for each Hub until you find the FTP
3. make sure no other USB device shares the same Root Hub as the FTP
4. Under the Power Management tab for the Hub used by the FTP uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'

good luck

under the audio tab everything is greyed out - no way to choose my audio device.

Unplug your Fast Track Pro.
Uninstall your Fast Track Pro Drivers.
Reboot your Computer.
Google "M-Audio, Driver Updates" .........Actually, just go here http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support&tab=driver
Do not plug in your Fast Track Pro.
Install the correct drivers for Your Fast Track Pro. Pay attention to which OS you have, including the Service Pack Numbers.
Now Plug in your Fast Track Pro.
You are now up and running.
Now, Go here http://www.realtek.com/Downloads/do...=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
and download your Audio Codec 97 drivers.
You are complete!

By the way, I don't know why you're missing AC 97 but thought the other day that you might be.
Tell me please. What OS are you using and which service packs do you have installed?
Also, Do you have Windows updates scheduled?

windows XP professional - service pack 3.

what's AC97?

And let me add - I haven't plugged in my fast track pro at all when this happens.

Haven't plugged it in for 3 days actually - I only use it when I'm recording/mixing and what not.

(although I would love to be able to use it to watch videos/listen to music on itunes etc. I'm not quite sure how to. The audio that is going to it from my USB is only that from my DAW)

If I'm using my PC for recreational needs - I unplug the fast track (which I do whenever I'm done recording) and hook my speakers up back to my internal sound card.

XP Pro, Service Pack 3. Absolutely perfect. Marvelously wonderful.
Follow me now:

Well that's because you don't have AC97. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_codec which is what your system used before you bought the Fast Track and somehow lost Audio Codec 97.

And let me add - I haven't plugged in my fast track pro at all when this happens.

Yup!
Consequently, you don't have a soundcard.
I'd like you to follow my step by step instructions to make sure that you have the most recent drivers installed for your Fast Track Pro and have emphasized that you do not plug the device in during that process.
When you are done, set AC 97 as your default device for regular use on the PC and use your Fast Track Pro in your DAWs.

okay - total brainfart, but I just realized today that my friend gave me his old internal soundcard about 2 months ago (before I even got the fast track pro)

do you think taking it out, and reverting back to my old driver would fix the problem? (or the driver you mention Jim?)

Also - off topic question, but the fast track sounds sooo good.
Is it possible to get all my sound to rout out through my usb to this? I would like to listen to itunes, and youtube - and wmv files and whatnot through this.

Yes.
Just plug your speakers into the headphone jack.
You may need a stereo "Y" connector.
Problem solved. I see that you've been unplugging your speakers and doing this anyway.
So, do as I suggested, turn it on and set it up as your default recording and playback device.
You have no need of AC97 if you go this route, nor do you need the old card.
The Fast Track Pro is your soundcard. That's what an audio interface is.

What's the friend's internal card, by the way?

Edit: I suggested the headphone jack because I can't remember if the Fast Track Pro has lines out.
Also: I use my Echo Mona in the exact same way. It's far more efficient than the AC97 or whichever software the computer uses.

umm, not sure - it uses the driver SB Live! 24-bit though. ah, looked it up - it's a "Sound Blaster"

Okay, well as far as the fast track pro - it doesn't seem to put any audio except from my DAW out to the speakers. (I already have the speakers going to an RCA converter to the interface) If I go to youtube, just complete silence. But back in cubase it gives me sound -

Did you reinstall the drivers?
Turn the Fast Track Pro on.
Double click on the red "M", bottom right of your screen or go into "All Programs" start up menu and set it up from there.
If that doesn't work, download AC97 and do it through that panel.
"That Panel" is the one that's pictured above.

I've sent you a PM.
You should be up and running before you read it.
G'nite:drunk:
