Compressor and Limiter Defined?

I've used compressors and limiters before and know how they "sound" but don't know exactly what they are doing or where they might be best used.

I hear that adding compression and limiting to a final mix is a good thing, but not sure why. Also, would these help vocal tracks?

Any general info, article links, etc., anyone has on compressors and limiters would be appreciated.

Also, a limiter is effectively a compresser with the compression set to infinity.
