Compression Question

Me and my band just recorded a a bunch of vocal, guitar, bass, and drum tracks. We are going to mix it pretty soon but I wanted to know what you guys thought of compression first. On guitar, for instance, do you think each track should be compressed seperately or should the entire song be compressed when it is all mixed together? And what if guitar doesn't sound like it needs to be compressed. Should I compress is anyway?

I wanted to know what you guys thought of compression first.

You compress signals that have too wide of a dynamic range to fit with the rest of the mix. You don't compress just to compress. You compress where it's needed. Might be at the track level, might be at the subgroup level. Depends on what the mix is asking for.
