Compression Question #2

I have my compressor last in the chain before the interface. The compressor has a +4/ -10 button on the back. My mixer has the same buttons beside the channel controls. Does anyone know what these buttons are for, and how they work together; if they work together. Also why the hell is my compressor causing a buzz sound. Not there when I turn it off, but comes back when i turn it on and sing. could it possibly be the cable or the connector?

1) I can't recommend enough removing the compressor from the input chain. There's no "undo" on a compressor and 9 out of 10 times (IME) it's being improperly used, throwing the input gain staging into a tizzy.

2) +4 is balanced, -10 is unbalanced. If you're running a completely balanced chain then everything should be at +4 (look in your manuals).
