Guys, I'm into modern alternative emo/screamo rock stuff and the more I listen to recent recordings, from 2005 and up (Nickelback, Hawthorne Heights, Bullet For My Valentine, etc) the mixes are really tight and sound really compressed to shite.
It's like all the tracks are overcompressed to bits by a distressor and then glued together to blend in more. Tom Lord-Alge pioneered this technique in the 90's but now it seems everyone is using it.
My question is, do you guys think it's a good idea to compress every track to the max for the new rock/metal genre? I'm not talking about compressing the WHOLE mix, only the tracks till the living end...even distorted guitars?
And mastering guys, does this kind of procedure help you in getting those -7/-8 dBrms REQUIRED in today's rock stuff? In other words, do you find it easier to achieve good loudness when the tracks in a mix are really compressed and then there is nothing on the bus and ample headroom to master Note that my ideal loudness is about -6 dbrms, but no one except leon zervos seems to be able to make it..! And leon zervos is OUT of price!
I was always conservative on compression and used it to smash drums to bits and get a tight sound, used it a little on bass and vox, but never on every guitar track! I think I might need to do this to get the new tight type of sound where everything is blended together and guitars are so in your face that they appear behind you !
