Why you gotta be so mean?
I can not seem to figure out how this works. I have done searches here and just I the Internet. But I can not seem to figure out how exactly to do this. I want the kick drum to be dominant and the bass to still be pumping. So how do I set a side chain with the bass and kick? What are some comps that have a side chain? I need a step by step, others places never really explained how to do it. Thanks

The one that is going to dominate over the other is split off to the side chain input to a compressor on the other's track. That primary track then causes the compressor to reduce it's gain. Generally called 'ducking.

Yeah, think of it as this :
If you're going to duck the bass under the kick, then it's the bass that's being compressed. So that's the signal that goes through the compressor.

And as mixsit says, the dominant signal is the key input.

I don't know if you want hardware or software, but there are many options for both. There's the RNC, the dbx 160 series, etc.

In software, I think it mostly depends on the application that you're using for whether or not it has sidechain functionality. I know both Reaper and Protools do.

I'm using cubase. And what I really need to know is how to make the bass react to the kick. Thanks
