Cool!

One of my fav tunes from Neil.

Bring those guitars up a bit and maybe add some mids to them. They sound a bit washed out.

Like the live, open sound you have on the drums.

File cuts off abruptly.

Nice one!

i'm a huge neil fan, so when i saw the thread title i jumped to listen........

i'd definitely go down on the bass and up on the guitars..........

the drums are played well.........my drummer (who is amazing and can play just about anything at any speed) has trouble on this one........i've never seen him struggle with a song other than this one.....he claims it's because of neil's weird writing style.....who knows?

i was waiting for the one note solo at the end......didn't happen, but that's fine, because your solo was nice

Thanks guys for the listen.

Emeric
I started the fade earlier and that smooths the end a touch. Thanks for the comment on the drum sound.

The drummer is a friend of mine.Twenty years ago he owned a recording studio (16 track analog) and now his drums were in storage before I got him to set them up over at my place.

I reposted the tune with a remix from your suggestions.

Cool.........nice ride at the end. The mix sounded muddy to me....really needs a bit of 'sparkle' on the top-end. Could use some more kick drum....bass sounded ok.........guitars could come up some.................a few minor pitch issues..............nice ride; very appropriate to the song too.
very cool! :)

Thanks for the suggestions,Lt Bob.I've remixed and reposted it with incremental changes in the directions that you and the others have suggested.
The biggest change was I put a compressor/limiter on the two bus whereas the mix you heard before had nothing on the master bus.I guess I consider the modern sound overprocessed and only reluctantly tart it up.Only verb is on the three vocal parts and a bit on the snare.Snare, kick, drum bus and lead vox have insert compressors.BG vox share an aux.
To combat mud,I rolled off the outro guitars -20 at 500 Hz!The rhythm guitars were -10 at 300 or so.All low frequency sounds like bass, kick and snare were sharply rolled off below 40 Hz to kill any rumble.
In terms of sparkle, the only real high frequency content I have in this mix is the cymbals.I put a -20 dB rolloff at 4000 Hz on the overheads and then raised them up a few dB in the mix.I can't go any more or the hihats will take your head off!

Now this was a really good cover. Its played pretty well and the vocals and harmonies were cool. The over all sound is a little distant and veiled though. I know you like the vintage sound where the drums and instruments aren't in your face but I think it's still a little too distant.

Track Rat
First off, thanks for listening and the comments. If you had the raw tracks at your disposal, what kind of techniques would you apply to get a less distant and more unveiled sound?

i like the new mix a lot better.............the bass sits a lot better....guitars have more power....it's definitely an improvement..........nice job

Thanks powderfinger
You and the other guys helping with suggestions is making the mix improve.

Yes, the second remix is much better.

This is a fun song to cover, and this recording has good energy. It hangs together really well & sounds really clean. Every instrument has a clear sound and presence, and the lead guitar really has that Neil Young tone. Reverb's tasteful. Basic enjoyable listening for cover tune jams. The whole thing sounds very authentic and close to the original, which I enjoy a lot. Cinnamon Girl. Good job.

They don't make songs like that anymore.

The washed out guitars is due to the effects on them. Push the dry sound up and the effects distortion down a little and they should pop out.

I was getting a little too much bass on my speakers too. The low notes of the guitars were conflicting with the bass so put a about a 150Hz high pass on those guitars and that should clear it up. Maybe slightly higher. Use your ears.

Performed well however, obvious talent in the room. Good job.
