Dont even get me started on Squire! If your playing live they wont stay in tune worth a damn and they sound like shit. Maybe you could put some good pickups in them and make it sound ok but thats as good as its gonna get. If your recording...then why the hell are you using a Squire?

Everything I read here is regarding Squier Strats. Now I know the Texmex strats don't suck as much as the Chinese ones, and the Jap strats are alleged to be fair guitars in some cases. All I want to know is- has *anybody* played a Squier Tele that did not suck? I haven't. And Jimistone, what you say about the Epi's is flat-out bogus. Like all cheap axes, you have to go through a few of them to find one with no major flaws, but the good ones are very, very good.
The real question is, do you just hate Gibsons? If you do, you're going to hate an Epiphone too. What the hell, as near as I can tell, I'm the only guitar picker in the world that hates Strats. Different strokes-Richie

I have a Squire Stagemaster.
I bought it because I hadn't played in 12 years and it reminded me of the last Ax I had (Charvel model 7)
For the $250.00 I got a one piece neck with Floyd Rose and 24 unblocked frets made me very happy.
When strung properly I can beat the snot out of the whammy and it stays in tune. It sounds and feels nice to this cheap guy!
I played a few before I found one I liked, and I ended up trading it for a different one after a few months (same model) because of an electronics issue. I had it set up by a local tech and it performs well.
As Mars music took a shit I played several Epi's. They were fine guitars but the comparison with Squire isn't quite on the same level as the Epi's I saw were almost as much as Gibsons.
I have never played a "cheap" Epi so I can't say where they stand.
Not all Squires can be judged by the $125.00 "Strat" they make.

jcmm steps off his soapbox and grabs his CHEAP Ax

:D

I have a Squire P-Bass. I dont like epiphone basses. they just dont feel right.

And in this corner...

Treeline had it right. Either way, you can end up with a prize or some junk. I had an Epi LP Custom for a while. It felt and played wonderful, but it got sold quick when the ex and I split (sentimental reasons). I have an 82 Squier Tele. It plays well, and stays in tune after much bending and B-bender abuse.
It's almost like picking the better ride.
Ford Pinto or AMC Pacer...hee hee hee

I have an Epi Les Paul custom and an American standard Stratocaster. Both cost me about the same amount (both bought used) and are comparable in playability and QC.
I was a guitar tech for Charvel/Jackson for a couple of years at IMC.I QCd a LOT of guitars. The more expensive the axe,the more consistant the QC.The less it costs, the more you have to sift through masses of mediocre planks to find one that speaks to you.

Absolutely true!

It is possible to find a low-priced guitar that has very good playability and tone, but you have to do alot of searching to find a "diamond-in-the-rough" among the "planks", as Tom called them. :D

If you're intent is to get a good guitar for a cheap price, be prepared to play many, many crappy guitars before you find it.

Tough call, I've owned squires and epis both. I liked the necks on the squires but the bodies on the epis seem more comfortable, I know thats personal preference. Some of the new epis (samicks really) leave a lot to be desired in my opinion.

Ive got an Epi Dot and I love it!!!!

BUT...

kind of an unfair comparison. Epi's are more like the low-end Fenders (Jap?) than like the Squiers, and the price shows. You'll pay as much for a GOOD Fender as a Gibson, but the cheap Fender prices compare favorably with the Epis. The Squiers are way cheaper.

I wanted a 335, paid the $450, and got an Epi Dot. If I wanted a Strat or Tele, I'd pay the $349-399 and get a Fender Standard.

I would skip paying the $129 for the Squier.

Sheraton

I have a 64 Epiphone Sheraton,,and an old Fender Lead 2 but the Sheraton is my favorite...They're both great guitars but the Epi fits my hands better....

personally i have always been a strat guy, i hate gibsons and epiphones, just dont like the ugly shape of a lespaul or sg, i dont realy like the tone they get either. to tell you the truth i think the squier sucks to but it has alot more bang for the buck than any epiphone ive played, the only thing that sucks about the squier is the pickups and the tuning pegs so replace them and then youve gott a awesome guitar that will out play any epiphone at any price, of course this is just my opinion and im sure others wont view it this way lol. but realy i havnt likes the gibsons for a long time they are selling there guitars on a old name that died along time ago when they left kalamazoo mich. and they are charging a ridiculous price for them, heck you can by a vintage lespaul cheaper than a knew one and there is no way in hell id pay that much for a guitar that was made by a damn program in a machine lol. i have a mexican made strat and i put tex specials in it and id dare say it plays far better than any epi or gibson ive ever touched. it just feels wright in my hands where a lespaul feels unbalnced to me, and the neck feels like a block of wood on most pauls ive played. anyway id buy a new herritage before a gibson they are made wright here in michigan and they rock.

I'll take an epiphone (that I've inspected) anyday. Just don't like the thin tone on Fenders. Fat humbucker tone rules!

I do prefer Fender basses though. Not neccessarily Squire though.

I think the varied opinions has a lot to do with the guitar to guitar variation in both those models. Two people picking one of each from a pile and doing an A/B would not be performing the same test. In my experience, the squire strats (excluding the bullets series) are capable of being very good with a little picking and choosing, some minor upgrades, and a good setup. Inherently designed as the erector set of guitars, it's infinitely upgradable. Personally I've never played an epi without at least one bum fret.

If I was buying a guitar for 300 or less I wouldn't look at either of those. Squires? you must be kidding me, maybe the old squires were decent but the new ones aren't. Epiphones? if its a hollowbody yeah I'd get it, but other than that they're not on par with other companies. I'd go with an Ibanez, maybe a Samick. But in the end aren't we all missing the point? its just a samick :p

just to add a bit to my last post, I now realize that Dani Pace did mention that they're built by samick, but I got impatient reading through a page of posts saying that epiphones are the same as gibsons.

I have about 14 guitars... one of my faves is my 1982 Made in Japan Squier Strat.... 23 years old, never goes out of tune, has a GREAT feel, really good tone.... (I bought it new for $160...)

For reference, I worked in music store long ago, and have owned over 25 diff guitars, and played for a living for 10 years....

My old Squier hangs w/ the best Made In America Strats of today.... really....

I have a mid 80's Japanese Fender Squire Strat. Awhile back I ventured into the nearest big city and went to a few rather large "Chain" Music stores.
I must have played over 3 dozen NON squire Fender Stratocasters ranging from $300- $900. My Jap model sounded better, and was built better in dozens of ways-materials, paint, detail, hardware etc. If you find the right one, the necks are made 3X better than the newer Fender Strats, even a $900 model.

Just my 2 cents.

Gibson-Epiphone..whole different guitar line. Can't compare them. I have a 62 Epiphone Casino. Sounds great, but again you can't compare them to a Fender. The new low end Epi's are also made very crude.

Peace..Ron

I like the Epiphone myself. Squire is not real. There was no Squire back in 1950s. Epiphone was real. They were great guitars back then. They are still around and still real. I have one and I love it. The people at Harmony Central like it too.
