I'd voted for Epiphone, but I could have just as easily voted for Squier. I own three of each - Epiphone PR100, PR350-12E and Les Paul Jr. 90; Squier Affinity P-Bass, Fat Telecaster and Bullet Special. The Squier Bullet Special I'd bought because Fender Tom DeLonge Strats are no longer in production and hard to come by, and before Fender had released their So Cal Speed Shop Strat. Although I'd ordered my Bullet Special from Musician's Friend, I'd actually tried one before, and nearly knocked myself out of my shoes when I played it through a Fender Twin Reverb combo.

The Epiphone Les Paul Jr. 90 is a beast unto its own, and I'd ordered it from Musician's Friend on a whim (completely untried), but once I was playing it I was glad I'd followed that whim. For this one, I say "a beast unto its own" because it's not easy to replicate its tones with my Gibson Les Paul Faded Double Cut...I can get close enough, but there's a certain crunch to the Epi LP Jr. 90's single bridge P90 (with a volume and tone control) that seems to be quite unique to this particular configuration.

I don't even think you can put Squire in the same league as Epiphone.

Epi les pauls are good guitars, Epi SGs are good guitars, Epiphone makes some great guitars.
Unfortunately they are priced fairly accordingly... you can get an epi les paul for 400-500 new
but you can get a squier for $189 or $149.
so there' no real comparison.
Epiphone makes a decent $400 guitar, maybe one of the best,
but I think Squier makes the best $150 guitar hands down.
and if you look through enough of them to find one with a good straight neck and decently intonated, and change out the pickups, you've got a good player that you dont have to worry about breaking when you throw it around.

epiphone by far

ive played a cople epi-gibsons not too shabby

no vote here, not enough options like...

both brands are equal in quality in their respective price range, it just depends on whether you want single coil pickups or humbuckers and which body style you like most.
it really all boils down to personal preference.

"Squire" is a cheap brand name and only implies a strat copy. "Epiphone" can be anything from a cheap ass guitar to an ultra-classy 1950's original!

I stick with Epiphone by the only choices listed above. Classier.

not a copy pal... Squier is owned by Fender in fact all Squiers have the name Fender on the head stock.

I own a 2001 "Stratocaster by Fender Squier" and a Epi Les Paul Standard, both lefty. Being lefty, and cheap, I am limited to what I can find.

Changed pups to Texas Specials and Burstbucker Pros, respectively.

Changed tuners to Fender leftys and Gibson Bell-head Grovers, from Squire leftys and Epi common-head Grovers, respectively. Only changed the Grovers to Grovers because I had them and I liked the bell-shaped heads- just for looks.

And I didn't vote, because I like 'em both.

But what I wanna know, is who the heck revives a six and one-half year-old poll??

I think a lot of people's opinions on this subject are just formed from hearsay and predetermined bias. I didn't like the Squier Strat I tried. But I can't comment on Squier guitars in general. I've had good experiences with Epiphone, so I voted for that.

There are most likely worthwhile guitars from both brands.

It's almost like picking the better ride.
Ford Pinto or AMC Pacer...hee hee hee
jimbo

No mystery why you didn't include the Chevy Vega- they all rusted away...

I have an Eip Les Paul Standard. Put Burstbucker Pro Alnico 5's (whew! What a name!) in it... And a Squier Standard Strat. Put Texas Specials in it. Neither are bottom of the barrel guitars. Interestingly, you hear so much about the need to upgrade the tuners, but both of these guitars had fine tuners- I only replaced them because I already had nicer looking tuners, languishing in my guitar parts box.

Like 'em both. The Squier plays and sounds almost indistinguishable from m MIA Strat. I don't (yet) own a Gibson LP to compare the Epi to. If I didn't acquire the Fender after the Squier (did I acquire the Squier? Yeah, I guess I did...) I would be keeping the Squier, but it's for sale.

So, I can't choose.

But what I wanna know, is who the heck revives a six and one-half year-old poll??

And, who the heck forgets he posted to a thread, and post again about a week later???

You shouldn't even mention Squier in the same sentence as Epiphone. Epiphones in general have more quality built in than Squier can even dream about. If you want to sample some Epiphone quality, check out an Epiphone Firebird, if you can find one.

Also, be careful of your use of the term "Epi." The "Epi" brand was created by the son of the founder of Epiphone, and for my buck, his acoustics were better.
