Cheap Matched SDC Condensers for Acoustic Guitar?

Well it is a hassle...first you have to suscribe....then order the back issue....so you get suprised with it in about 6-8 weeks.

I'm intrigued by the Audiopile 300C, but really can't find too much more info on them.

I've got both the Studio Project B1 and C1 and i think those are both great. I'll bet those C4's are pretty good too if they're anywhere as solid as the other ones i've got.

The ADK Vienna is a large diaphragm mic right?
 
I'm not actually a big fan of the B-1. I own one, and it's never gotten used much. I had a C-3, but it got sold/traded because I didn't use *it* much, either. The C-4's are a whole different animal. I consider them as good a pencil mic as there is out there for the price. I've used them extensively, but recently sold them to buy some other stuff. For cheap small diaphragms, I use C2000B's and occasionally Oktava MC012's. Most of the time, it's a pair of Neumanns, which sound a lot like the C2000B's, but with more detail. I certainly believe that for entry level small diaphragm condensers, you could do a lot worse than the C-4's.-Richie
 
I'd go with a pair of the Naiant mics for the acoustic, then use the rest of the money for two used Oktava MK-012 mics. You should be able to come in at or around $400 for all four put together. Omni mics like the Naiant are great for acoustic guitar, and the Oktavas make great overheads.

What he said.

Order the Naiants now (X-Qs should be fine, imo), and you can start making good tracks right away, then take your time and find a good deal for another pair with the rest of the money, and you'll still use the Naiants later.

I like the Oktavas, and lucked into a used pair for very little $ (well inside the budget). I did not like the MXL 603s very much, but recently got them modified by Marik (aka Mark Fouxman in that list) (exceeding the stated budget, all in, I think) and they're great now. I've never tried the AT (4041 or 4021, but now I might). I use some other SDCs, but they're outside the budget (but not too far - no Neumanns for me, yet)

I also lucked into a used pair of AT4033 for $300 -- I think they usually go for a little more, but perhaps not. These are sort of "medium" diaphragm mics, and they work pretty well for acoustic and drums. If I didn't have the others, I'd probably use these a lot more, so keep an eye out for a good deal on them.

Buying used = usually a good idea, btw.
 
Oops. I missed that. In that case, I'd probably suggest using those for guitar and going with an MK-012 pair for overheads.

That's all true. However...

I'm going to post an expanded version of the article on small diaphragm mics at my own website with Tape Op's blessing. We had to cut it, so some of the descriptions of the mics are a bit thin to say the least.

I hope to have it up this week and when I do I'll post the link here.

Id suggest plotting out the results in graphic form...that way you can communicate what they said in the artical without stepping on any toes...

They did love the AT4041 mics

Pair of Pulsar 11 mics. They are medium diaphram mics, and generally very under rated. They're pretty amazing on acoustic instruments and can be gotten for $249. They are about as flat and natural as I've heard.
