Hey guys, I just joined a band as a bass player, but as I'm mainly a guitar player, I don't have a gigging bass amp. I have a cab, but I need a head. I plan to buy one, but I don't want to cheap out, so here's what I'm thinking for now:

I have a Mackie M800 power amp, and I have a bass cab. Can anyone recommend a cheap bass preamp/di that I could run through the power amp into the cab and get a somewhat usable tone? I'm just looking for something to hold me over.

Thanks.

I've gone into a multi-effects unit for the eq section and compressor then into a power amp/cab and worked ok.It's not ideal of course but at least there's some kind of tone control.

I've heard of people getting pretty good results out of a Sansamp Bass Driver, too.

If you want a super cheap intro bass preamp, the Art Tube MP is actually pretty good for that. Not good for much else, but I've used one in my studio for DI bass for a while now and it's done a good job. Heck, they're like $30 now at Musician's Friend.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, guys. Now I've just got to narrow it down and pick one.

Because of this post I brought out my Hartke preamp for rehearsal tonight. I was impressed by the tonal control, it is a great little box for the money. Has an XLR direct out on it or a 1/4 inch. I am running it into a trace elliot head and turned off all of the compression and pre-modeling and used the preamp for all of my tone control. Worked out great.
