$875 for an open-box unit over at 8th Street...

... cheapest price I could find.

I have a pair of Orban-designed DBX 242 parametric EQ's and a 2-ch. Speck ASC. I consider the DBX's to be the "RNC" or eq for those who are on very limited funds.

I upgraded the ICs on the 242, and they sound much cleaner and tighter as a result. Very flexible EQ's.

bowisc, how do the speck and the 242 compare?

...I do like the simplicity and functionality of the P1 box (wish it was a full rack space though).

When I got my P1, I had them include a set of the mounting brackets which allow it to easily fit into a single rack space without having to use a rack-shelf adapter.

The P1 has been one of my best audio-recording purchases by far!!

They're both quite useable for me, but there's no doubt that the Specks will be in my rack for quite a while. They're definitely a notch or two up from the DBX 242. What I love about the Specks is that you can tweak to get the tone you want and the box just doesn't impart a harshness that most low/mid level EQ's leave behind. The transformers are a MUST HAVE!

The DBX 242 is a great unit if you can find them around $80-100 each, used. You can't beat them for that price range. Heck, even if they were twice that, I think they'd be worth it.

What I do like about the DBX is that is has better markings so that you can make more precise settings. With the Speck, markings can be sparse compared to the DBX, but this is a minor "inconvenience" (if any).

In summary,
They Specks are awesome.
The DBX 242's are one of the best values in the used eq. market.

Mr. Moon, I ordered with the rack ears, should be here in a week or so. Christmas comes early this year!

My understanding is that SafeSound has a channel strip in the pipeline that includes EQ. If the performance is as sweet as claimed for the P1, that could be a damn near an ideal solution for a lot of people going to disk: nice mic pre, instrument and line inputs, compressor, expander, EQ, limiter, and monitoring. What other box can do all those things well, doesn't cost $2,000, and isn't made in China? This is all speculation until it arrives, but I'm interested.

Here are some nice options for channel strips...

Langevin DVC - $1600

Great River $1075 :: Speck ASC $545 :: FMR RNC $175 = <$1800

Avalon 737 MERC.: $1750

TOFT ATC-2 - $1000 (M.I.C., but it's a decent box).

Thanks Bowisc,

That's a good list. I should have said, "doesn't cost $1,600" :) But wait . . . no expander on any of these setups.

Fletcher,

Thanks for the tip on the Drawmer, I'll work on the ambient conditions here.

Yes, I've heard I can do better than the NTK. What's on your shortlist for a voice-over mic?

The Microtech Gefell M-930, the Soundelux U-195 and the AEA R-84 have been what we've been recommending for VO work... which will be best/right for you application will have more to do with the quality of your voice and sense of aesthetic than anything else.

<spam>On the FMR mounting trays... I'm gonna pimp a little here http://www.mercenary.com/funklogic.html the Funk Logic "'69 Merc" tray is only $45- from our joint... but you will have to put up with our sense of humor on the face plate... the "straight" one is the NCC-1701 which is $5- more if you don't like our sense of humor.</spam>
