center vs. doubling

is there any difference between keeping a track in the center and putting the track in twice: hard left and hard right?

by putting the same track in twice, then you are in effect doubling the amplitude... by centering it, i believe you are kind of sharing the output between the two channels. so yes, there will be a difference between just centering and putting two identical tracks on the left and right. either will still result in a mono signal. someone will correct me if i'm wrong.

usually panning left and right is used with either two different takes of the same part or one side with a little bit of delay, otherwise, panning one left and one right just makes it louder.

The only difference is volume and hard drive space.

Putting a dupe track hard left and right isn't smart. Major waste of hard drive space. You can achieve the same effect by bumping the volume of it centered by +3db.

Personally I never hard pan ANYTHING.

A signal that appears to be in the "centre" is really just the exact same thing coming from two speakers.
