CD-R Playback Problems

So, I just got my Philips CD-R 775 which can record CD-R and CD-RW. I made my first test recording using a CDR, and guess what! Despite the fact that CDR is supposed to be more universal, the disc will only playback on the Philips unit and a little boombox that I have. But it WON'T playback on my car's CD player or on my computer in Real Jukebox or Music Match.

What the hay? Can somebody tell me what's happening? I've finalized the disc and it will play on at least one CD player (the little boombox) other than the one I made it on. But why won't it play on others? I thought this was supposed the be the problem with CDRW??????????

Thanks in advance.

CD-Rs are more universal than CD-RWs, but not "universal" at all.... many older players will (and do!) have trouble with them....

CD-Rs (and CD-RWs for that matter), are not the same as a commerically pressed CD. Reflectivity is lower and pit depth/density is less, requiring a more powerful laser pickup than many older, and some newer CD-players/DVD players don't have.

And there's no way around a unit that won't read 'em - if it doesn't read 'em, it never will - unless you change the pickup assembly (which would be prohibitively expensive on an older unit, if it is even possible!)

Thanks

Thanks, Bruce.

I managed to get the disc to play on my laptop by just installing a newer version of Windows Media Player.

I guess I'm going to have to go buy a new car with a later model CD player..... :)

Hey, break open the champagne! I've been promoted to Junior Member!

Thanks again, Jason

Try using a silver CD-R like a Mitsui or HHB. If you are using a dark blue or dark green CD-R the problem could be that the laser in your car CD player isn't that strong and is just bouncing off the dye and not reading the tracks on your disc. I have an old Teac 18 bit player that won't play a blue CD at all but it will play my Mitsui's although even then it will occasionally refuse to play track one.

I agree... I have an older Sony player that has trouble with Maxells, but has no problem with unbranded Sony or Mitsui's....
