Every tape deck in my house is malfunctioning now and they all seem to come down with similar problems, problems that cost as much to fix or more than I paid for the thing itself. They only last about a year or two, I take care of em, clean the heads every now and then, but they still seem to break down in some way. My engineer has a closet full of them, all out of working order, it's just cheaper to buy a new one. SHould I just pay more for one? Any one know of a good sturdy, long-lasting one? Or should I learn how to fix them myself?

I would expect a $200 cassette to be neither robust, nor high-quality...

For day-to-day studio operation, I'd suggest the Tascam 112 mkII or the 122 mkIII - they are intended for constant studio use and have outstanding sound quality........

Thanks

Probably what I need, but what about for just regular home use, listening to music, ALL my cassette players are done for.
I'll check out the Tascam

Whoa

I just checked them out, they're out of my price range right now.
What about $400.00?

What is the problem you're having with them? I've had cassette decks in $250 range last for years for home use....!!

It seems like as soon as the warranty runs out

The cassettes begin sounding warped in the beginning of the recording, then the other deck begins sounding warped no matter what tape I play in it, then both work off and on, or start creasing the mylar tape, ruining the cassette. I have two that do the exact same thing. Sometimes they will play some cassettes and not others, then sometimes they just don't work at all, everything sounds warped, but I can play the same tape in the car and it sounds fine.

Just out of curiousity, why are you using casettes so much? Why not buy a CD burner and burn your old tapes? I honestly can't remember the last time I played a casette ;)

Are you being unusually hard on the tape transport? Are you using cheap blank cassettes (whose shells are likely faulty)? Are these cassette decks from Radio Shack by any chance?

Like I said, I've had cassette decks in my living room last for years!

And Tex is right -- I too haven't used a cassette much lately at all..........!

Never from Radio shack

I do use alot of blank cassettes that are probably cheap, What are good blank tapes to buy?
We have alot of old cassettes that we still listen to. Alot of them we get when we're overseas, most of the countries we visit only sell cassettes of the music we want.
I still think a cassette is more sturdy than a CD.
