This such a wierd thread.
Cd players and tape decks output at line level. Turntables without preamps output less. If you connect line out/ analog out of a CD player to line in of a sound card it should record perfectly in terms of level.
I don't understand all the stuff that went on earlier in this thread.
Version2 when you change levels in the windows mixer are you sure are changing recording levels or playback levels. (Dumb I know but i have to ask). Also does the clipping happen frequently in the tape and among various tapes? If ot maybe the tape was just recorded loudly but the windows mixer should take care of this anyway. When you hear the clipping is it during recording or only during playback? If only at playback you should try to increase the quality of the file. I use 32 bit (float). I used to get the problem you speak of in total recorer. But when I up the quality in Sound Forge I don't get it.
