im using an art tube mp with a sp-b1 and a delta 1010... i have the output on the pre all the way up and the input at the first bar (any further and it starts to distort), i have the +20db on but am still not at the level i would like to be! is this a case where i need a better preamp?

Sounds like something's wrong. That unit should have enough gain.

Hi

I know the square root of zero about any of the equipment you are listing but it sounds like the input signal is far too high a level for your mic pre. If it distorts with the gain on the first dot and a -20dB pad at the front you must be whacking it with a seriously hot line level signal.

Actually... is that button a 20dB pad or a 20dB boost? the +20dB confused me.

So, the obvious question is what is your signal source and what level do you think that it's poking out?

The Tube MP does indeed have a 20dB boost switch.

There is 40dB or 60dB of gain on the input and another 10dB on the output. The way I would read that is that the input knob is the trim control, with an additional 10dB of gain available on the output (probably something like a "tube drive" idea).

You are probably overloading the input by having the +20 switch on. That's why it is distorting at the first bar. Try turning the +20 switch off and then turning up the input to a higher level. That may give you more room to play with.

Also, are you using phantom power? To get distortion with a mic like that you must be feeding the ART input with some seriously high levels. Check the mic manual and ART manual to make sure you have both set up the way they should be.

Have you tried our suggestions yet? If so, did it help, or are you still having the same difficulties?

I would also make sure the inputs on the Delta are set to -10 and not +4.

ahhh yess tex... changing from +4 to -10 made all the difference. thank you!

It's almost always something like that or a cable.
