I'm having an incredible amount of trouble getting a cassette tape into my new Tascan424 MKIII. I'm thinking that something is defective with my unit - I plug it in, power it on, and the tape spindles just start spinning... I can still control them w/ pitch / hi-low speed,,, but no LCD action or anything.

However, I want to get a tape into it before I take it back (it's quite a hastle around here...) to make sure that I'm doing the right thing. Could somebody describe the process of getting a tape in? It just dosen't seem to fit! Do the recording heads mechanically move down? If not, I see no way of getting the cassette around those plastic tabs at the top.... I'm perplexed

It may seem dumb, but I'm having a hard time figuring it out.

It sounds to me like your heads are locked...to get a cassette in, you're supposed to basicly angle the tape in such a way that you can see the actual tape when you're putting it in...the top of the tape goes under those tabs first, then you push the bottom part of the tape down and it 'locks in'...you'll hear a click. If the heads are blocking the way, then something is definately wrong...it may be that the unit is locked in play or record mode. You say the spindles are moving? That must mean they are locked in play/record mode...which also means that the heads are stuck there. If it's a brand new unit (bought from a store), I'd just go exchange it and get another 424MKIII, it's a terrific recorder. I have one, but I'm selling it to get an 8 track (I need the 8 tracks).

That's what I figured. The heads must actually 'move up' when in play or record... and it does seem to be locked. Looks like I'll roll back to the Music Loft tommorrow and do a switch-er-oo.

Shouldn't be too much hastle.. plus, I've lived for this long w/o a 4track... what's one more day?

Thanks dude.

No problem! Have fun with the 4 track...and I'm sure you'll find answers to nearly every question you have about them here...I sure have.
