can't find the hole!

I am going to be recording my drummer again very soon, looking for a couple pieces of advice:

1) where should we put the hole in the kick drum...looking for a jimmy eat world type sound

2) Have a B1, B3, 2-SM58, and 4 - Sennheiser e604. I have a mackie 1604vlz pro, and presonus firestation with 2 tube mic preamps built in....thoughts on mic placement?

I would cut a hole about 6 inches in diameter (much bigger than that and it eliminates the purpose of having a hole) maybe 2 - 4 inches off of the bottom and left side of the bass drum (IE: Equidistant 2-4 inches from both the side and the bottom). This way, you don't get too much of a clicky sound of the attack and still get that thump that Jimmy Eat World has in their music.

Do you have to have a hole in the resonant head? I have recorded several times with no hole in the head, and like the sound. I would try to find a sweet spot before you cut a hole in a piece of $40 plastic!

I myself do not cut holes in the head either -- I found that the resonant head doesn't contribute much to the tone except for keeping it less boomy (or at least it does that with how low I tune it) but my bass is usually the part of the drums I'm happiest about.

Although, it does make it easier to adjust your pillow, if you got one.

Geez, where are you buying your resonant heads? Should be approximately half that...
