I just downloaded 5.1 into the same folder and I can't find the exe extension. I've downloaded revs in the past and have never had this problem before. When I clk on one of the files, my pc asks me which program I would like to use to open what I've clicked on. I'm not exactly a computer expert...any advice?...thanks.

The downloaded files get misnamed. Go into the folder you put them into, view details and set up the window size so that you can see the whole filename, and rename all the .WOx files to have only one of those extensions (you'll find that they have two, e.g.: "Setup_<mumble>.WO2..WO2". It ought to simply be "Setup_<mumble>.WO2". Then, doubleclick on "Setup_<mumble>.exe", _not_ on any of the WOx files, and you'll be in business.

will do, skippy...but, I don't see how this will uncover the exe extension...thanks.

It will crowbar the process. When you doubleclick on a file, Windows will try to run it, somehow. If the file you click on is _not_ an executable (for example, your WOx files), then Windows will boil some tea leaves, consult the registry, pull up a few blades of grass and drop them to see which way the wind is blowing, say three Hail Bills, consult the nearest gnome, and then categorically refuse to run whatever executable is most likely to be responsible. In other words: clicking on a data file is probably going to be a lose.

If, on the other hand, you doubleclick on a file with a .exe extension, Windows will (usually) believe you, and fail to screw up; which is to say it will actually run that application. Usually. Most of the time, anyway. Can you tell I'm a UNIX guy? I got yer freakin' registry right HERE... I could eat a handful of sand and _puke_ a better operating system.

Disclaimer: No animals (or sand, for that matter) were harmed during the previous rant. Yes, I do use Windows anyway, with only minor grumbling and the occasional uncontrollable outbreak of coruscatingly homicidal rage. (;-)

Whew. I'm all better now. In any case, if you have a file named (and I quote) "Setup_PC_<your_product>_V51R1_Update.exe" (where <your_product> = either "VST", "VST32", or "VST_Score"): then doubleclick on *that* file, and no other.

If you don't have that file, then go back to ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/download/pc/Cubase_VST/Cubase51x/51r1/ and get it. It is the key to your installation. Also, check to make absolutely sure that _<your_product>_ is correct on all the files that you have: their web site is very badly laid out, and I can imagine that it'd be relatively easy to get some incorrect files. You should have .WO2-.WO8, and the .exe, for a total of 8 files.

After that (and changing the .WOx extensions!), it *should* work painlessly...

thanks for your time skippy...I viewed the details of each of the files in the manner you advised, and I didn't see any anomalous appendages...seven of them are named WO2 thru WO8, and one is named Setup_Cubase_VST32_V5R5--but no exe....I did notice that the WO8 file is only 2.5meg, so I went back to steinberg to check if this is the correct size and it is...still no exe file...

You'll have to resize the divider between "Name" and "Size" in your view-details window to see this (left-click on the divider between the two fields in the gray header to the listing in the window, and drag it to the right to make more room for the file names), but here is the URL for the exact file you'll have to get before this will work:

ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/download/pc/Cubase_VST/Cubase51x/51r1/Setup_PC_Cubase_VST32_V51R1_Update.exe

I tested that link, and it does point to the exact file. Hopefully, once you get that file and execute it, you'll get going. There are 8 files that make up the update, _not_ 7... Chances are that you grabbed the .exe for one of the other versions, by mistake- or didn't get it at all...

Or maybe there's one other chance: if it downloads wirth _no_ .exe extension, then add the .exe and double-click on it anyway. For all I know, they solved the redundant-extension problem and created another new problem by ripping off *all* the extensions. Anyway, I know that that is the pointer to the right file.

Hope that helps. Otherwise, I'm stumped: I can't be any more exact than that!

*LOOOOOOOOOOL* skippy - well, I used the link to the ftp server you gave in the update thread, I just took it all down, 174Mb - half of it is the Japanese installation, anyway - works fine for me, I just hit exe and it runs - no renameing or anything

thanks skippy, for the link--that's all I needed--I didn't have to rename the files...everything seems to be in order now.
