Do nightclubs have to get new mics for every band?
Nope, and I have caught colds from nasty club mics. I always bring my own now.

I know I've posted this before. The local GC told me the same health line. I looked at him and asked him then how can they sell vintage mics. Were'nt they used near someones mouth.....no answer

I can see that, being a club situation and the fact that you'd use the mic right after someone else but viruses don't have a really long shelf life and without some kind of source to sustain them they aren't going to live very long on the mic. Just pointing out that if it were really a law then there's a massive group of business's large and small that are violating it.

There's at least 51 different laws an regulations on this, and probably even more if you brak it down to a local level.

But Iw ouldn't be surprised if there is a HHS ruling on this sort of activity. But I don't have time to find it right now

I've had GC tell me that then tell me if I bought the insurance on the mic they had no choice but to accept it.

Carry a bottle of SeaBreeze with you if you don't bring your own mic. Club mics are pretty nasty, for sure.

Hmmm, that's kinda like being forced to pay the "restocking fee" up front.

I hate GC.

Here ya go. Good luck finding any reference to bans on microphone or harmonica returns.

New Jersey (ZZounds is based in NJ) Dept of Health Statutes.

The only reference I can find to a microphone is in the definition of what a hearing aid is in the state of NJ.

I managed a music store for 6 years myself and I can say we used that same line to keep dopes from buying mics on Friday and returning them after the gig on Monday. Harmonicas we simply didn't take back because that is friggin gross.

I have never seen a health dept inspector go to any bar, bingo hall, church, stadium, concert venue, pawn shop, bus terminal, subway station, radio station, TV station, recording studio, or any where else microphones are in public use and ask to see their mics. It doesn't happen. The "can't return for health reasons" is a load of crap.... because everyone uses a Schoeps omni as a vocal mic in a punk band. And if a dude did stop by your store, I can gurantee he was bored or was checking on something unrelated to microphones... like the sewage lines to the back room toilet. We sold used flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, tubas, susaphones, oboes, bassons, ad nauseum and people were actully blowing spit and snot into them. No health dept concern there.

GC tried pulling this "law" bullshit with me last month. I asked them how the health department manages to sterilize payphones after every use. They looked at me like I was a moron but I felt like it was a valid point. IMO this "law" is more about what madguitrst is talking about. My whole point is after a little bit of hasseling I got them to agree to a return if I didn't like the mic.

Telephone Sanitizers.

The most absurd was a conversation I had with Zzounds. I was interested in buying a couple of dozen in-ear monitors and wanted to buy a single one to test to see if they would be usable. I won't do that unless I can return it if the electronics suck ass.

I asked them if I could return it if I used by own earphones with it for testing. They said no, I couldn't, because of the "obvious health concerns".

I wrote back and asked what health concerns there could be if I used my own earphones. They basically replied that while they agreed that it wasn't a health concern, they still would not permit a return on the product.

For that reason, and for that reason only, Zzounds lost about a $2500 order. Fuck 'em.

Not only that, I haven't found a single music store that wouldn't allow returns on trumpet or trombone MOUTHPIECES that go directly against your mouth. They simply charge a small sanitizing fee for cleaning.

No, it is solely because they don't want people buying them for a gig, using them, and returning them. Of course, you'd think after somebody spent a few thousand dollars at their store, the store would realize that you're not somebody who is going to do that. See my comment about Zzounds and how they lost a chance at a multi-thousand dollar contract over not letting me try out an in-ear wireless monitor using my OWN HEADSET. Bunch of retards.

Some days, I wish someone would pass a law making it a crime to procreate if your intelligence is below a certain level. :D

powerplay music- i work at the shirley location, but we also have a westhampton location.

its a small store, really no killer stuff, no great deals. we beat all of the small time competitors prices, but we cant even play with GC and Sam Ash..

we buy shit from them because its cheaper than our wholesale prices sometimes.. but sure, i'll hook you up!

re; the neg feedback. yes i am posting to say i told you so.

you guys can go nuts with the idea, but it is a law that is chock full of holes i guess, but it is something that i was warned. we dont give refunds at all anyway so it really wouldnt affect us, nobody cheats us, we kinda pull our own weight and make our policies to protect us.

you are all 100% correct, its a pretty messed up situation, but it is there whether you agree with it or not.

i just posted the thread to support a past argument.

It's a law that exists only in your (or your manager's) mind.

A while back I purchased a pair of Joemeek JM37DP mics from Zzounds. Before I ordered them, I emailed customer service and told them that I wanted to order a pair but what would happen if a mic was defective. I told them I would test the mics out with an instrument source shortly after they arrived. They emailed me back that I would have no problem returning the mic(s) if they were defective.

By the way, the 37DP meekrophones really are a bargain.

I tried to return underwear once. That was part of my "never do laundry or pay for clothing again" initiative.

Back in my club days when I could still hear, GG Allin stuck a perfectly good beta 58 right up his ass on stage. Shortly after he was clubbed with a mic stand. Now that's entertainment! We burned the mic in the incinerator.
