I wasn't sure which heading to post this in, so this one will have to be good enough. I was hoping to just share an experience I had yesterday with people who are obviously interested in similar things as myself, because I think it was one of the coolest things that has happened to me in my short time in the world of music production. So, here goes. Excuse me if I ramble a bit.
Two good friends of mine, a drummer and guitarist, asked me to do a couple tracks for them. They wanted me to do the tracking as well as mix it. I agreed because I really want more experience and there's no better way than to work with good friends right?!
But, I didn't want to just record them in some crappy bedroom or living room or whatever, so I went on a search for a good space. I ended up finding a little studio just a couple miles away that is run by a really young guy (older than me, but i think younger than 30 or so). We talked about how I just wanted to use his room for tracking purposes, but wouldn't need him as an engineer or anything, and that I wanted to do as much as possible all on my own so that I'm forced to learn what i need to know.
So, he told me that we could use any of the gear in his studio (which he said is worth around 50 grand now!!) including mics, stands, amps, guitars, the drum kit, outboard gear, etc, etc. I brought a lot of my own stuff so that I could learn to use it better and to get results with it, rather than using his great stuff..
This is how it finally went down, and the meat of this little story... We got there, and he helped me set up my computer to all of his gear. I ended up running my little laptop through his entire 32 track console! At first, I was nearly sick even being in the same room as some of the stuff (avalon gear, an API lunchbox, etc) because I had never seen it before. So he gave me the quick and dirty (and i mean QUICK!) about how to run his console.. You know, "this knob is your input gain, these faders are your monitors, these ones are the sends to your computer, this knob lets you adjust this and that for this and that" and OH MY! So now, we're getting signals into the console and I have them showing in my DAW. Now he just says "Well guys, have fun tracking! I have some stuff to do with the wife, so if it's too late when you're done, just lock up and i'll take care of it tomorrow".
So, here's this guy that I had just met one time before, and he's basically allowing me to single handedly run a studio and do what I wanted, without him even being there! I'm gonna end this here by just saying that it could have been the most incredible experience of my entire life. At the end of the night, I didn't know what half the knobs on that console were for (even though he explained before) but I knew that those sounds were in my DAW, and they sounded GOOOOOD! He let me run the whole show you know? He trusted me and my buddies enough to let us do it on our own, and the learning that I took away from that was insane. I guess the point of this is to say how thankful I am to have had that chance, and also, how thankful I am to have been a part of this community because I actually went in there and spoke the production language and never really got lost in talking with him once. (My buddies were impressed too!) I learned most of what I know from right here on HR, and with all of your help and links to outside sources. I've decided to bust A$$ to get to a place where I can own all the cool toys I got to play with there, and I hope I can keep using you all for your great Knowledge! Thanks for reading all of this!
