Composing

No seriously....no thought was put into this at the start.
The guitars were right from the amp with PZM, loud and no thought for levels, sacrilege i know, it was total abuse. I was more interested in capturing some thing worthy of a lead break from my friend Mick who doesnt have much rythm......in fact he froze when it came to record.

Anyway....as a songwriter/composer.....I could hear it in my mind, then it all came together and I finished the lyrics.(I write the lyrics while out on my pushbike)

You could say we spent about 10 hours putting it together (over 3 weeks). Next time I will take more care.

You have to do this kind of thing to actually compose the song and take inspiration, you have to go with instinct, first idea best idea etc then it all composes itself. (before you lose the spirit) Fortunately as just a 'demo' it had enough to be a mix. This is home recording at its best. The actual composition is the art.

A professional, would redo everything all again in controlled conditions. I've never done that. Usually because I've had enough after the 'demo' and I'm onto something else. I know this is a good 'taster of a song' I've written 50+ of equal quality and in the same conditions, in my living room.

I just wanted to let you know how I as a composer operates lol

Insight

exactly. i didn't mean for my comments to come across as condescending. just that was what i was hearing over here.

did you record any of the guitars direct or where they all through the amp? what preamp did you use for the mic?

sorry i know thats off the topic of mixing i just found myself wanting to know more about what i was hearing.

Guitars not direct......basically.....because it takes away inspiration when composing, if some one feels better with there usual sound .....in this case a living room amp, set the way they like it. The best thing you can do is set the highest level without clip and kill the reverb. My job as producer is to make musicians feel comfortable and capture something special. I think I did that with our lead break here. Remember we were only composing a 'demo'.

Vocals - no pre-amp, I think any mixer will be glad to have dry, in tune vocals with an even level and good diction. This is all I was interested in. All because I only just wrote that lyric. Now the best time to record any song is after a stint on the road and you've perfected the delivery. I just about got what i wanted. Enough to be interesting.

btw the tune came in a spit second from a jam with my friend. Its the most common chord progression you know. But to me it never sounds like anybody elses.

Just some insight.

Nice mix Mike.

Thanks man..

when i went back to listen to my second mix i thought i might have over done it on the hi's (master eq)

still not sure...what do you think?

i like your mix as well..cause it sounds a little thicker and warmer than what i was able to get.
Have you thought about throwing a De-esser on the vocals?
I separated the verses and the chorus cause i was hearing a shh on the chorus and an ess on the verse.

After my vocal processing and listening to my mix, the "ess" or "shh" did not stand out enough for me to notice. I usually deal with them when they make the vocals sound shrill.

I think your EQ works for your mix.

I haven't listened to any of the mixes and won't until I am done. My mix is going through pretty well. There were 6 or 7 bass notes that were a bit too late, so fixed the timing on those, although since the entire bass track is late, I made sure these fixes keep the general groove. I also tightened the timing on the backing vocals to sit better with the main vocal. Makes things nice and tight.

I am pretty happy with the way the guitars are coming out although that last lead is really harsh and there are some offending resonances, so had to EQ it pretty severly, with about 6 bands of very narrow EQs targetting those resonances. I also high-passed it and low passed it pretty severely, then put it through some delay and spring reverb. Sounds pretty good now.

Looking at some of the previous posts, I see that Cybergord wants some delay on the voice. Working on it, still not happy with it but I think I know what to do about it.

I have left the drums pretty much alone, although I am compressing them with the bass slightly with my 1176LN UAD plug just to have them groove together and give a bit of an attitude, although I think the drums overall are OK. I might experiment with some parallel compression, not sure.

I'll probably also add some delay and reverb to the first lead guitar.

Then the rest will probably go through some room ambience stuff to make them gel together better.

Should have a close-to-final mix done tomorrow evening and will post it for some scrutiny and work on it some more over the weekend based on the comments I get.

Cheers!

Hi.

I've been browsing these forums for a few months now and have just signed up as I want to join in with this thread and so this is my first post.

I found this thread last night and decided to have a go and so I spent last night mixing this track though I must stress that it's 100% headphones mix as it was late here. Anyway, I dropped the mix to Mp3 and listened to it in my car today and it sounded ok(imo) and so I thought I'd post it.

As it was late, I didn't get chance to do anything with feedback_guitar, last_guitar_lead or rocknroll...other than level and panning and so these are still raw. Anyway, have a listen and let me know what you think.

I must say, the more I hear this song, the more I love it. Also cybergord, those lyrics, am I right in hearing 'Old gold...you don't shine...like you did before' ? because that line means alot to the football club I support(old gold in colour)...and with you being literally down the road from me, I'm sure you know who I mean. ;-)

Great song mate, good luck with it...

Mart.

Welcome to the forum Mart and for contributing a mix on your first post (VERY RARE)!

Welcome Mart

Welcome Mart ...Glad to see my contest has sparked interest here.

Unfortunately....your mix is only 7 secs long lol

You will have to do some cranking if you want to keep up with the guys here, the secret is to give your mix some life and soul, something interesting, make it alive!

Yes...lyrics are Old Gold Dont Shine Like It Did Before....

Your Wolves wont need to sing this song until they get relegated again next season haha

Soul Motion Lyrics

For all those who want to sing along with the mix......

Old gold don't shine like it did before.

I've told you a thousand times
in so many lifetimes
a truth you seek is in your heart
The end of the world is here
I have no fear
and will you listen to me now
and I'm in love and I'm in...

Soul motion
guided by the light
you're the masters of disaster
I'm the king of paradise
Soul motion
strolling down the road
get out of my way, get out of my way
for you know not what you do
and ain't nobody gonna stop me now

Old gold don't shine like it did before

You're wasting your time in school
you're heart is the classroom
that dialogue won't help you now
I've waited a long long time
for something to happen
and something's happening right now
and I'm in love and I'm in...

Soul motion
guided by the light
you're the masters of destruction
I'm the king of paradise
Soul motion
strolling down the road
get out of my way, get out of my way
for you know not what you do
and ain't nobody gonna stop us now

Can you hear Jesus singing this? lol

@Mart

Good for first mix.....you have the drums up front and vocals a little distant...a little muddy. Nice drum cut off at the end.

Good luck

Try downloading it a second time, I had the same problem the first time myself.

Yea thanks Fishmed...I actually thought that Cybergord was basically saying that the mix is so poor that it's not worth listening after 7 secs LOL.

So what happened...you clicked the mp3 link and only got a 7 second track ?
I'll have to look into that then cause that's my own website.

I'll work on the mix some more over the weekend then Cybergord. Thanks.

So what's the deal with lightningmp3?? I tried again, but got no email.

Here's my first mix:
Soul Motion

I just listened to it on crappy laptop speakers and in my wife's car. The kick is way too prominent in the lows, the bass gets lost on the laptop (but that was expected), and I am still struggling with the vocal - it sometimes gets lost and sometimes sticks out too much. Tomorow I am going to zero out all the things I've done to the vocal and start from scratch to see if I can get it to sit better in the mix.

Let me know what you think.

Great mix Noisewreck....amazing how you have cleaned it up. And the vocals, brilliant, I dont remember singing as good as that?? Im tired now, I'll listen on my hifi after a few hours sleep. Ive stayed awake all night working.
A couple of notes if i may add. Please lose the intro 4 bar drums and the delay i asked for...was a shorter delay on the attack??, however not prominent. Something like Bono would use....on the Fly (i think)....I'll think about this for later. Hard to explain.

Dastrick...much improved....this is the alternative mix.

lol...I'm paying nothing, but there are prizes remember.

The feedback is crucial for a winning mix. I know these guys love a challenge and I for one appreciate the participation. I'm learning a lot from this and I'm sure the mixers are too.

rocknroll
