Ok so my first recording console(setup) was a Tascam portastudio 424 MK11 and I'd like to know if it can be used as a interface for a DAW. Don't get me wrong I loved using this machine(and still have it) its just that I'm going to need more than 4 channels total for my project. The only reason that I just don't finish up a track and bounce it to a mono channel is that I want total control of the mix and fear messing up.

Sure, but you'll still need something to convert the analog audio to digital whether that's the soundcard in your PC or some external audio interface. The 424 would fulfill the role as the mixer. If you're wanting to be able to dump up to 4 tape tracks to the DAW simultaneously then you'll need an audio interface that can handle at least 4 channels.

This is what I assumed, but I just wanted to make sure. thanks.

Years ago I tried to do the same thing. I was all excited because the 424 has 4 RCA outputs on the back so I thought I could send 4 tracks at a time to my AD converter. Unfortunately those are strictly tape outputs so you would need to record to tape first then send that to your interface. I ended up just having to use the stereo out and panning left or right for separation.
