I'm new to the home recording suff, but I have cakewalk pro audio 9. Is this a good program for home recording, editing, mixing? Also what will I need besides my musical instruments?

C7, that was very well written. I am used to reading your rants in the cave ( with mixed feelings), but I really enjoyed the way you just explained things, very clear and concise. Well done.

How do I record my guitar? Hmm My guitar chord wont fit into my sound card so do I need some kind of convertor or a new sound card?

You can buy adapters at Radio Shack, however your guitar needs to be amplified, Get a mic pre, then mic your amp.

All confused? Pre mic what is this? A guitar amplifier will that work, or is it some other kind of amplifier?

Yes what is pre-mic?

I to am fairly new to Cakewalk, and have problems with input levels occsionally. Will the pre-mic help with this? Is it a stand alone device or a plug in? Where can I research?

Ok lets start out buy purchasing a new sound card. What do you recommend?

There is a smorgashborg (sp?) of information on this site. You will have to do a "little" searching on your own (when you get the time) :) .

The are a multitude of soundcards that you could purchase or we here at HR.COM could suggest for you.

But, first of all, you need to share with us...

What kind of music are trying to create?

What "level" of music are you trying to create?

What equipment do you already own?

What are the specifications on your computer?

How much money are you trying/willing to spend?

:D

Share some info with us, we would love to help you. :)

Here is another site with a ton of info for you...

Post us back.

Also, Cake 9 is a wonderful program.

And I'm sure, like c7sus said, it will definitely keep your hands full for quite some time. :)

Good tips

Great input. I am also considering upgrading my sound card in the near future. But I am still a little unclear. I have been looking at "Live Drive" for the access at the front of my PC. Now is this also a sound card or is the sound card just a chip inside the PC.

For me the recording is vocals and guitar, entry level I'd say. Is <$200 feasible?

I'm wanting to create my own beats using cakewalk, like a hiphop beat then add in a guitar track using my guitar, and also add some volcals in too. Thats pretty much what I'm wanting to do.

My computer:
P3 800
128mb
10g harddrive
Soundblaster live ( sound card)
Geforce2 video card
Win2k

I don't have any equipment besides my guitar, guitar amp, a mic or two, drum set and cake walk 9.

So the sound card? I've read that I need a full duplex sound card what else do I need in a sound card. And any suggestions on witch on to get please. Thanks for all the help!

Very interesting C7sus.
About these cables your suggesting.
Is there a specific type of cable to use? Like between the preamp and the computer? Not size, I understand that. I'm wondering about shieding. Are there shielded computer cables, like guitar cables or are the computer cables already shielded? or does it matter?
thanx!!!!

What I don't understand is how do I plug my guitar in to the computer so I can record it?

You need to mic your amp. Read the above on how to accomplish this.

Live Drive has 1/4 inputs doesn't it?

I haven't researced it thouroughly yet, but its my understanding that Live Drive has organic 1/4" inputs. If I am correct, any time you go through any adapter thats a chance for signal degradation. So I want something with the standard mic/guitar 1/4" input.

I'm still not crystal clear, is Live Drive a "sound card" (like a "laser"). or just a port?
