Cab IR's -vs- an EQ in the effects loop

Overall, my experience with impulse responses so far has been pretty good. But it seems that they only give an accurate representation of a cab when the result hasn't been EQ'd yet, and when the raw sound going in has not been EQ'd either...Meaning the flatter the EQ curve, the more it sounds like an actual amp. Moving on to more extreme EQ settings though, these things just fall totally flat. If you pump up the bass frequencies on an IR guitar track, it just doesn't seem to have a similar effect to tweaking an EQ in an amp's effects loop. Same with increasing the treble, it only adds grainy fizz and makes the sound harsh. (I'm guessing that power amps smooth out some of the high end on real amps.) Using a different IR doesn't help either, because really, the only differences between IR's are their EQ curves and reverb profiles.

Is it just me or do other people have the same thoughts about this?
