I posted an earlier mix of this a several days back.

Here is the latest mix.

I've tried to make most of the changes which were offered up here, but my head is so wrapped up with this that I don't feel like I'm making it better...only worse.

Some objective ears would certainly be appreciated.

I must have missed the first post.........
I sure like this mix though.
The performances are VERY good.
All the instruments are keeping very good time.
I don't know what else you could ask for in a bluegrass tune.

The vocals sound more natural now. The guitar picking sound is more smooth. The manolin and the guitar sound more full.

Sounds like the mix done. Good job. Sounds great.

Very tasty, and kickin' tune.

I'm a Mastertone 5-string player... what are the details on the recording of the banjo? Very nice sounding.

I really like this mix, and the performances, and the song. I am a finger-picking guitar player, and I like this. What mics did you use on the vocals and the banjo? How about pres?
 
bgavin and vsimmons: banjo is a custom built and was recorded with a single AT 4033 and the XDR pre's in my little Mackie 1202 VLZPro. About 10-12" from 12th fret angled back toward bridge slightly. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, a great player too! :-)

Same equipment on vocals.

Prozkgrl: (love your username!) Yep, this a bluegrass tune that's been around for quite some time. The recording is a three-piece where Dad plays banjer and guitar, Stepmom plays upright and 17 y.o. daughter sings and plays mandolin.

This is one of 12 tunes they cut at my new little acoustic studio. My first real (read that "paying") session. I've been recording about a year.

A Question for Earl

What is the nature of your system, Earl? Are you using a dedicated recorder or computer based? If you're computer based, what kind of sound card/AD converters are you using?

Much nicer than the first mix. I've been absent from here for a long time - glad I dropped by now!! She's got a really nice voice. The band cooks! Love it! Into the "keeper" file with this one.

Oh yeah, I agree with what Khompewtur said 100% too! (He's always so profound.)

I think you are getting a great sound, but there are always ways to improve your system. Mics and pres are a great place to invest, I believe. I think the 101 is a good pre, but for the music you are doing, I would suggest either a Millennia HV-3B, which I have now, or a pendulum, which I may get. These are 2 channel (stereo) pres and you may find that useful. I bought a set of Neumann KM184's and record all my acoustic instruments in stereo (which creates many, too many possibilities.) And am having fun. The problem is that I have other mics too and put them into the mix as well, so I will run 4 mics to get 1 acoustic guitar take, so now I need another pre! Just a thought. Have fun. You are getting a great sound.
 
I just picked up a Baby Bottle earlier this week. I've also got the 2-4033's, a couple of 4041's, an old CAD E-100 and a MXL 990.

Man, that Baby Bottle is hot, hot, hot!

Ever since I bought the "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" sountrack, I've been hooked on this kind of music.
 
Damn I love this song

Just have to say again what a great piece this is. It does clip at :046-0:48 and around 1:13. You should fix that. A little limiting will fix it. I added a limiter and it sounded great. Kept it from clipping with no loss of dynamics. And it sounded a little "smoother."
 
Very nice, crisp recording. I would turn down the reverb on the lead vox a bit - bring her up "closer" to the listener, where the instruments are.

I also heard the clips that Morningloryseed mentioned.

Great bluegrass track, though. Have you ever been to the Old Settler's fest down in Austin? Great fun and lots of great bluegrass.
