I've got a Marshall JCM 900 2x12 Combo, and to improve my distortion sound, have cranked the volume or post gain to the max, and am using the pre-gain as a volume control. (BTW try this, it sound so good) The question is, how much faster will I burn out the EL34's by using the power stage to distort? Any experience/ideas?

For "THE DEFINITIVE" answer, (i.e. one from a guy who's been repairing tube amps since God was a toddler and who knows more about tubes and tube amps than just about anyone on the net), send your question to:

LORD_VALVE@prodigy.net

or

detritus@ix.netcom.com

His name's Willie, but most just call him "Lord Valve". He's one of the most informed guys I've ever met.

And the reply (drumrollplease)
No it won't burn my Tubes any faster (whew, i'm too poor to retube once a month, plus have it re-biased) And as for hurting the speakers, it depends on how loud I play it. They're good ol'celestions though, and It's louder than a train at about 12o'clock anyway, so I should be OK
So it's safe to try!

BTW Lord Valve is quick on the answering the e-mail thing

Cool, thanks... I e-mailed him and will see what he has to say.

If you get an answer, remember to come back and post it. I'd like to hear what he says.
