Dang, I wanted to be a "Recording Genius", what knowledge could you possibly gain from being a Silver member?!?!?!?
:D

I feel older......and yes they will play on any DVD player, apart from on some of the first ones.

Age and Status...

Older...Silver Memeber....he he......

At least I still have Force of Nature to look forward too...;)

At 2 K do you get a gold Member?? Chicks may dig that!!

watch out for cheap-unbranded

I've had compusa name brand disks start breaking up in my car stereo CD's player, so I KNOW there is some difference...

I'd buy the more expensive memorex or something....you get what you pay for, sometimes (believe it or not) -

There's Definitely a Difference!

I've just finished a home-recorded project and have been burning the finished product myself on a $200 Iomega burner. I've burned to (Walmart's stock of ) Memorex, Maxell and Imation and I notice A VERY DISTINCT difference in tonal qualities. The Maxell's are a bit noisier, but have a nicer, warmer and rounded-off quality which is easier on the ears. The Memorex is clearer and quieter, but a bit harsh and less warm. The Imation is about the same as the Memorex, but a bit less harsh.

I don't know if it's just the fact that I'm recording copies of a self-produced project, but, like I said, there is a very distinct difference to me. Is Bruce the only one who seems to think there's no real discernible difference?

As you can guess, I'm pretty new to homerec, but if I can hear a significant difference......Or am I just deaf?

Rock On---Aldo

no you are not deaf. Try for instance the Memorex ones which say "Music CD-R" very good

My farts are a force of nature.

I have been told that the black bottomed ones are the best for music but I havent really heard much of a difference from the ones I use for data backup.

I use the fuji ones but they are as cheap as anything else Ive seen.

wow!

The replies are overwhelming ... :)

So there are people who said "there are differences between regular CDR and "music" CDR" ... some said there aren't. Is it safe to say it depends on what kind of music you put on them?

I put my songs on a Fuji CDR and a Hypermedia 8cm (a cheaper brand, I for one never heard of this brand before buying it) one. The sounds are actually a little different. Fuji gave me warmer softer sounds while the Hypermedia one gave me a louder signal but harder sharper sounds. Of course the 8cm CD you can't play on your car stereo. :( And it is only 21 mins. But it looks pretty cute. :D

Well, that's all I have experimented after I last posted. Thanks again guys! Keeping burning! :)

Generally, you should make sure the DVD player is compatible with CD-R when you purchase the DVD player. sjoko2 had a point in that most recent DVD players will play them. However, this is different from CD players. Almost all recent CD players will play CD-R's. This does not necessarily hold true for all new DVD players. If you are buying a DVD player and want to play CD-R's, make sure it is compatible before you purchase the DVD player.

Well, BBB beat me to the punch. I think others have flogged the brand issue to death (for the record I use TDK). But regarding DVD players....

Actually quite a few DVD players out there do NOT play music CDRs. This was understandable when they first came out (early CD players don't play CDRs either). Apparently you have to have a brighter laser to properly read CDRs. However now I'm starting to wonder if the manufacturers aren't deliberately crippleing their newer DVD decks in this regard.

The best source I have seen as to whether a particular DVD deck does or does not play CDRs is Crutchfield. Their catalogs, at least the ones I've recently seen, clearly spell out whether a deck plays music CDRs or not. I imagine their web site does to.

Cool, thanx guys (definitly gotta go check out that Crutchfield site :)).

My dad bought the DVD player a while ago and at the time I had no clue about some DVD players not playing CD-Rs, otherwise I would have gone down to the store with a CD-R and tested it out before hand.....but it's too late for that now. :(

I'm hoping that maybe the problem is just the cheapo CD-Rs I've been using and that a Mitsui or similiar brand will actually work. :)

Well sure Musician's Friend says that...

Those "pitches" are written by SALESMEN !!

The Taiyo Yuden CRD's were one of the first in the industry...along with Mitsui I believe.

TY CD's I understand to be of very high quality and are constructed with a CYANINE dye layer.

I personally prefer the Phthalocyanine type dye used by Mitsui.

Bottom line buy a few at 69 cents each and try them on your burner and in your players...check the sound and compatability.

I'll stick with my Mitsui's at a buck a shot...

Both sell in bulk at good prices here...

Good luck burning!!
