Building a studio desk

i wanted to build a desk for me, but...i'm gonna do it myself. i was at home depot today, should i get 1/2inch or 3/4inch MDF to build by desk? i want to build along the lines of the synergy 800 but with 2 racks on each side.
 
C9 - Go with the 3/4" by all means. I prefer the 3/4" birch plywood but thats just a preference.

thanks for the link. do you know where i can get full specs for a desk, i'm gonna go buy all the wood this weekend.
o and why 3/4" birch plywood over 3/4"MDF? at home depot its only like a 40cent to $1.25 difference.
 
I just thing the plywood finishes better.
 
I used the fiberboard at 3/4" and covered the top with 1' sqare floor tiles that look like Black and white checkerboard. they were 39 cents at home depot.

i might build the desk out of ply then... i'm gonna finnishthe table with a nice stain over it or maybe just black paint or something.
does plywood split a lot though? i know mdf splits sometimes, i usually just use liquid nail and stuff like that when working with mdf, i build a lot of subwoofer boxes.
 
I'd stay away from the MDF and go with 3/4" ply. I used 1 1/2" deck screws and Liquid Nail to assemble my desk. No cleats, just lined up the pieces, run a bead of LN, and drove the screws. As long as you're carefull about lining up your pieces and don't get too close to an edge and you won't have any splitting problems.
The reason I don't like the MDF for this application is it's too heavy and it spauls out to easily.
 
yea mdf is heavy, i built a box for 6 12's for a tahoe and the box was close to 200-250 pounds it may have been more than that but it felt like 200-250.
so i'll go with 3/4" ply, Track Rat can i see some pics of your desk? also what size monitors do you have? i wanted to go with 2 17", 2 19" or 2 21" b/c i can get a good price on them, the 19 and 21" are so deep though

nice looking desk that's all i need. my desk is gonna be a little larger about 100"x40" but your desk came out real nice i like it. how much did it cost you to build it?
i don't think i NEED a 2 monitor setup i can get a 19" for $130 might just go that route... it'll be better than my 15inch now...
 
It was under $100 for the plywood, glue and screws.
 
that's real good i'll get my stuff this weekend then. did you do the cuts or home depot? B/c the only thing i want to do is put it together
 
I cut it out and assembled it. It would have been a little tricky to have them cut it out.

Do not let the guys at those places cut your wood for you. I did the other weekend and they where not that percise in their work.
 
home built console+

Hi, Rick here, and I'm always happy to see someone willing to build. Anyone can buy the same thing as everybody else. Heres a pic of my console I built. It has stainless steel legs, mild steel tubing frame, black melamine inserts and monitor shelf , mdf/gloss black laminate hinged hood , 10 hardwood end caps, naughied covered armrest, colored plex lighting, ply & 2x4 cable platform and foot rest. It has (4)built in head phone outputs w/ volume controls and (2) hi z inputs, a linear motion keyboard track, misc. cantelevered and removable module racks, 2 side rackmounts for close control of processors,(2) sm-57 mics for console talkback, suspended (22 rackmount belly module(for rackmount computers, amps, midi and audio patchbays etc., and thats
not all. When I designed this it took a month on autocad and the drafting board. It took another three months to build. But boy does it work great. Its real flexible for integrating new gear. Theres also some removable arms that are on a track under the arm rest for midiizer, keyboards etc. But I removed them for another project. Hang in there, and have fun cause when you get done, you can use the money you saved for other stuff. And you can say I did it myself. Email me for other photos/ideas.
