I know just about nothing when it comes to studio design, but my dad's asking me to inquire about the subject all the same. He's thinking of adding an addition to his house, which will include a basement. He's thinking of putting a studio down there. The dimensions will be about 30X30 with ten foot ceilings. He wants a control room and a live room/rehearsal space -- enough for a full band to practice. He's not too worried about disturbing the neighbors...there aren't any near by. But he does want accurate/good sounding rooms. How would you cut it up? Are ten foot ceilings adequate? I figure I should have him ask a specialist, but I want to get a rough idea. Any suggestions?

30x30 is a pretty decent sized setup. 10 feet is a bit low on the ceilings, though. While you can treat them with rigid fiberglass to help them "disappear" a bit acoustically, any extra height would be VERY helpful. Even 12 foot versus 10 foot could be a big improvement.

I'd expect him to be able to get a good size recording/rehearsal space, a good size control room and a vocal booth in that space, depending on the particulars such as where the stairs are, etc.

i have two topics i am curious about:
first, i was reading the sae site, which says that a control room should be (if my conversions are correct) at least 20 ft by 17 ft. If this is the case, the live room would be only about 10 ft by 13 ft (excluding the thickness of the separating walls). this isn't very large at all. is it feasable to make the control room smaller? looking at the sae's studio plans, i'm intrigued by the "corner control room" design. but in my dad's case, maybe combine studio a and studio b into one space. is this advisable? or are there any other SPECIFIC ways to carve up this 30x30 space that any of you would suggest?

second of all, where can i found out more about these slot resonators? and should i plan on having every single wall angled, including the ceilings?

sorry about all these questions. i'm trying to get an idea of a basic design though. thanks for all your help.
