Does anyone know where I can find dimensions / plans for building a rackmount case for my studio gear?

I've purchased a few sets of side rails, but I'm not exactly sure on the dimensions....more specifically the on center whole spacing for standard 19" rackmount gear.

:o

Thanks,
Rick

Thanks for the link!

I see that your actual opening before rails is 19.25", I'm guessing that this will accept all standard 19" rack gear once the rails are installed? (Still having trouble finding what the hole spacing on center is supposed to be...)

Thanks,
Rick

all rackmount gear is supposed to be 19" wide. you could build your rack's opening exactly 19", but it's going to be tight. Most builders add 1/4 to the total size of the opening (1/8" on each side). just mount your rails to the inside of this opening and everything will line up. Rack gear has slotted mounting holes to allow you to line everything up.

Good thread to keep in circulation

I have a friend who does pro sound and has his mobile rig set up in a truckful of expensive four space racks. When he sets up, one thing plugs into another and pow - it's done. Breaking down consistes of unplugging, tossing cords in the back of the unit and clipping on the cover. Fast as the dickens. And being 4-space racks, you don't break your back moving them around. When he's set up, the work space is clean and clear of the cables from Hell, which tend to congregate all around my rig.

So I took a page out of his book and built a couple of racks for my (modest) mobile gear out of MDF and 3/4" plywood. The MDF is just shelving you can find at Home Depot - 15" deep. I haven't gotten to the point of getting rack rails yet, so everything is screwed into inset blocks 3/4" recessed from the front. Plenty of room in the back as well. I tossed a couple of handles on the 4-rack space unit and have a small amp in a 3-space unit. Makes it easy to move! Looks clean when you set it up!

All I used was a table saw and a power drill, with ceramic coated deck screws and a square driver. I love the ceramic screws as they don't bind up and don't corrode. We'll see how long the MDF lasts, but it cuts like butter on the tablesaw.

Now I've got to work on a case for the mixer - that doesn't take three people to lift.

When i made my little set up, I did 19 1/4. I think 19 1/8 would look a bit better. Then just figure out how many spaces you need. Defineatly not too hard, just make sure it's square and you measure carefully.

Pics or steps?

Could anybody post some pics of their racks that they built and/or give some steps taken to build them?
