Bought Gear based on this Forum

Yes and no ... I've based my little microphone cabinet on a) positives reviews over different boards, not restricted to HR.com B) what I see in studio's when recording as a musicisian c) whatever good deal pops along on my way...

Behrie ECM8000 (first mic's)
SM57 (bacause they're classic)
AKG D112 (classic)
Senn421 (classic)
Neumann KM184 (classic)
AKG C391 (good deal)
Rode NT1 (good deal)
AKG C419 (got it for free)
Soundcraft Ghost (reviews)
Genelec 1031 (reviews + tried out a gazillion speakers)
Alesis HD24 (reviews and good deal, maybe the other way around :D )

So far, it has been two mic types:

ATM25
AT4040

I'm 100% pleased with both. I own multiple ATM25 and use them on drum kits and electric bass cabs. The AT4040 is my general purpose go-to mic (read: my only LDC) for quality micing.

Based on this forum, my next purchase will be a pair of SP C4 SDC. I'd like to own a pair of AT4049 or AKG C480B, but both are beyond my price range.

But in the past I have recommend both before... and lately I've been upgrading.

But I did buy a DAC-1 on the basis of Bob Ohlsson's enthusiastic postings on Gearslutz.com.

Julian's postings on the same forum also prompted me to grab a Cranesong HEDD when one showed up cheap on e-bay. And Fletcher influenced me on the Josephson C42's.

Most of my other stuff was bought in a more thoughtful fashion, although I've been known to make impulse buys at blowout sales or on e-bay.

When you say "ripped it" do you mean you stole it? I hate frickin theifs. :mad:
 
Well, Vsimmons, if I understand your broken English, you didn't score any points in my book. This is one where there'll be no argument between me and DJL, you scumbag. No doubt, you screwed somebody- a salesman at some store who got fired for missing a Neumann, or a mom and pop retailer who sweated every dollar while working 60 hour weeks, or a recording artist, an engineer, a producer, or just some old lady with a Neumann. I hope there's a special Behringer distortion room in hell for you.-Richie

There comes a time when a Neumann needs care by the Neumann repair service.

They have all serial numbers in a date base and when it turns out the mic is a stolen one, you're in trouble.

I was there a while ago when my m149 needed a new tube and the guy got in the computer in order to find out whether my mic was in the 'stolen catagory'. So I asked him: what if it was a stolen mic? He said: then sir, I'm afraid you can't left the building and I must call the police.
 
I only got a DMP-3 based on this BBS and because it was only $99 (after negotiations). It sounds good. I got the Avalon U5 and the Avalon M5 after reading about 1000 reviews and opinions on the PSW. I must say that I DID try each and everyone out in person. I say that buying based on opinion is not a good thing for something like the Avalon as it costs so much. But, the DMP-3 is little loss if the unit was not that good.

I've bought a LOT of stuff based on recommendations from members of this forum; Exclusively microphones though.
Not only that, but I have learned SOOO much about the physics of sound and sound reproduction, modal responses, response curves, microphone technology, mic patterns, acoustics... the list just goes on and on....
So many members, bring so much to the table here.
What a fantastic group of people we have here that so unselfishly share their knowledge and experiences!

Pre-amps, compressors, and other outboard gear I pretty much research on my own. I hit some other forums and ask around about that stuff. I fully subscribe to the ideology of "Buy cheap, buy twice." "Gearsluts" has some pretty knowlegeable people when it comes to higher end gear and equipment.

Dot's Ultimate mic-pre shoot out, aka "The Listening Sessions' is also phenominal resource! (Thanks Dot!!)

Blue Bear has ALWAYS helped me out whenever I ask for advice!

Who here, show of hands now, has gained insight from the help of John Sayers?

This board, indeed this entire community of home recordists and project studio enthusiasts, has been an incredible asset in helping me achieve the level of professionalism in my music production that I always knew was possible.

Marshall V67 (sold it, didn't particularly care for it)
MC012s (good deal, although I was already set to buy it outside of this forum)
ATM25 (I slept on this one until Sonusman and others gave it a thumbs up)
V69 (kept this one and like it for the most part)
DMP3 (while I don't use it very much it's certainly a good two-channel budget pre)
I bought Studio Projects stuff on my own
Lynx II soundcard (Sonusman raved about his Lynx I for years before I took the plunge)

I didn't mean I stole it. I meant I got a great deal on it. I bought it for 2400 hard earned American dollars on Ebay. I thought that was a great deal, so I feel like I ripped it, but it was a 98. You guys are touchy.

I just did a little reading on this mic (M149) and checked out the cost just out of curiosity.

Man, exactly what do you use that mic for? LOL

Im just curious as hell to know what it is your doing or recording to justify that cost. LOL

Folks really,, Enlighten us bottom feeders as to how you approach or get to the point where you pull a mic like this out.
To be honest. If I were rich as hell I would probably buy mics of such a caliber just to come in here and say hey,, I got these mics. But from a actual real life recording situation ( and I would assume highly pro) based on the cost, when do you pull a mic like this out.

My guess is when you have sombody like Madonna in your studio and she says " I aint singing a damn thing unless I get a M149 " LOL

Im curious ,, chime in high dollar mic pros. Enlighten us.

I read my original post, and I can see how you may have gotten the wrong idea. I apologize for the inaccurate representation. The serial number is 916 on my mic which I bought. I am its second owner. It is an awesome mic, but the biggest chance I have ever taken on ebay; therefore, I scored.

BUT before you start spreading rumors, you ought to confirm your facts. I, like you, do not like thiefs nor do I associate with them. The words I used do not exclusively have to imply a confession of REALLY STEALING a mic. "I ripped it" can, according to the protocol of our modern vernacular, and does in this case happen to mean "I got a great deal on it."

I forgive you.

It starts off like this: you want to get a good studio mic for around 500 bucks or less, one that will do everything. But for a little more, you can get a TLM103. Sounds great. For a while. Then you need a BETTER mic. One for this. One for that. Before you know it, you just dropped 2400 on a microphone. BUT I saved 1600 from my best deal new. I use it for vocals. How did I talk myself into it? I bought the TLM103 for about 600. I can get that and more on Ebay is I ever needed to sell it. At 2400 for the M149, I can also get my money back in a day. Plus I can write it all off through my production company. I am finding out that great gear only gives you the opportunity to make a great recording, it is not a guarantee by any stretch of the imagination. NOW you need a preamp...One for this, one for that...

that makes sense. the same can be approached with cheap @ss mics. I need better,, I need better.

So to rephrase my question a little. What is it that your hearing with the M149 compared to the TM to justify that much of a difference in price? I believe I have asked a similar question before, but then I wasn't as open minded to mics purchases.

I guess it boils down to if you got it,, then get it. Sh@t, next year I may be purchasing mics in that price range. Who knows, I sure as hell have bought a lot of stuff since I first started out.

Back to the old saying I guess, Different mics for different situations,, but the cost $$,, I need to go to one of these high end studios and see if my ears can hear thousands of dollars differences.

I am in no way knocking high end mics or their owners. Just trying to learn something as a bottom feeder.

Oh, Im sure you didnt steal that mic by posting it's serial. LOL
