Bottom heads - not enough ring!

Anyone have experience with this? Currently I am still using the stock bottom heads that came with my kit and I am just not satisfied with the amount of ring and sustain I get from my toms. They seem a little "thuddy" still. The stock heads are 200 mil heads and I know Ambassadors are 400 mil. If I go ahead and buy all ambassadors for the bottoms, will I get more ring out of the drum or not?

I wanna make sure I don't spend the money if I don't have to.

Oh, and I use ambassadors on all the top heads.

i would go for the new bottom heads it will give you more ring...

The stock heads are probably shot. I would put the remo ambassadors on as formentioned. But be aware just because you dont hit the resonant heads they still wear out as well probably looking at changing them ever other time you change the tops.

#1 rule - stock heads are crap. :D

I'd say go with the ambassadors.

If you go too thin (diplomats) there's less ring, and if you go to thick (emperors) there's less ring. The Ambassadors (and comparable weights by other companies) are pretty much the best overall heads for the resonant side.

Ditto. Clear Ambs, or clear G1s (my choice) work well, and over time they will just stretch out even though you're not htting them. Get some new ones, and tune them a slight bit higher than your batter heads. That will give you much more of a sustained ring I've found in my experience.

Yeah. These are all my thoughts as well. I just wanted to confirm them with other's experiences. The 200 mil seem more like diplomats. I thought about "freshening" them up with a hairdryer, but I still won't have the sound I'm looking for.

Time for new heads all around.

The hairdryer trick works if you need to get a head seated a little better, especially if your bearing edges aren't the greatest. I've done it, and by golly it works :-) But only for a short period, nothing beats a newly seated and tuned head.

Yup

All good advice - just chiming in. I replaced all the heads on my kit a few months ago, including new Ambassador heads on the resonant side (G2s on top) and the kit came right back to life. Cheers, Rez
