I am thinking about getting a used Boss GT-6 or a POD XT Live.

Can anybody tell me the good, bad, and ugly between them.

In my opinion, I would opt for the POD over the GT-6 any day. I have gone through 2 of the GT-6 boards in about 2 years. Not because they crapped out, but because I wasn't happy with any of the amp models. I sold the first one only to buy it again for the effects a year later. Even then I already had a rack unit with the effects, so I sold the second one. The amp models, not to mention the effects, in the POD are superior (to my ears) than anything the GT-6 could produce... Never heard a GT-8 though, that might be another option.

i can't say much about the POD because i never considered getting one. but several months ago i took my guitar to Guitar Center to check out the GT-8 and the Vox ToneLab. i ended up getting the ToneLab.

i didn't care for the distortion sounds of the GT-8. they just sounded noisy and sterile. the effects on the GT-8 are far better than the ones on the ToneLab, but that not what i was looking for.

it really depends on what you want out of your sound. i'd recommend taking your guitar to a local music store and plugging into them to find what YOU want. all you'll really get here are opinions...and you know what they say about those. -g-

I have a GT8 and can get any tone I want. Your factory presets are usually crap. And alot has to do with getting your output settings correct for your amp or mixer. And getting the input and output levels matched. Set the levels and read the manual. If your pickups are hot and overload the input of the GT6 or whatever you buy then you will get crap out of the unit. When playing at a store its hard telling what jerk screwed up what setting. When shopping make sure it is factory reset and inputs levels are not clipping. Alot of people just plug in flip the switch and stomp on the different pre-sets. Thats a bad way to go. I have recorded using my GT8 direct and just plugging into my Peavey JSX and sm57. And I get compliments on my guitar tone all the time. And even though my signing and drum playing sucks, I bet no one can tell me which tune is amp or GT8. I would do the 6 or 8 and read, read, read, the manuals and visit http://www.bossgtcentral.com/forum/index.php it is a very helpful site.

I would go for the PODxt. I have had it for a little over a year now and am VERY Happy with the tones I get from it. Just from the Mic Placement, Cabinet Models, and all the Effects, You can always find a good tone, you just have to be willing to take the time out to mess around with all the combinations to find an awsome tone.

the GT8 is MUCH better than the GT6 with it's new upgrades. Personally, I like it, and use it live 3 times a week straight into the PA along with a Roland GR33 synth. No amps anywhere.

Before getting the GT8, I looked LONG and hard at all the options. The GT8 is without question the most tweakable...but it's downfall too, as it has a learning curve. The presets bite. The effects excell, and most would agree the best on the market. People that complain about the overdrives either are hooked on "real" amps in my experience, or haven't given the GT8 enough time to experiment.

The POD isn't bad, but the GT8 goes beyond what a POD can do, and for recording, I wanted that option too.

some pros for the GT8:

two amp sounds at once
dynamic control of your sounds
effects in ANY order and they're decent too
good switching.

cons:
no decent computer interface for programming.

btw...I came from a Marshall/Ampeg/Fender tube amp background. Wish I had the GT8 during the 70's, 80's etc.

I have messed around with them.
I can get the Boss GT-6 for $200 and the POD XT Live for $250.

The things I like about the GT-6 are that it has an FX loop and some of the synths are cool but I don't think I would ever use them.

I like that the XT Live can be hooked to the computer via USB and good S/W to edit patches.

I am looking for a ProCo Rat type distortion and still have not been able to tweak either one to something I like.
