Can I sync these. That is, either make the blackface or the xt20 the slave, so I can have them both playback in sync.

sync blackface and XT20 together

To sync, all you need is a adat sync cable (shielded serial) from the "adat sync out" of one unit to the "adat sync in" of another. Either machine can be the first or "master" machine. The XT20 may work better as the master unit, it has more "locate" points and options available, compared to the older blackface, as well as a faster transport. Remember to keep the tapes separate, do not record on one and then record or playback that tape in the other unit.

Being that the blackface has the slower lock times, I'd slave the XT20 to the blackface..... if you do it the other way around, you'll always have to wait for the blackface to lock to the XT20, which will be slower.

Blue Bear, you might be right in slaving the XT20 to the blackface.

What Blue Bear said. Don't use fastest machine as master.

will locate a and locate b on the blackface just translate to 1 (a) and 2 (b) on the xt20?

Machine locates are independent from one another from machine to machine, whether they are slaved together or not... but initiating a locate on the Master unit causes all machines to locate to that point anyways, so I'm not sure why it would matter. Pressing a locate on a slave machine causes only that machine to move to the location.

The blackface records the digital data on the tape in reverse phase, the converters invert the phase of the signal on the way in and again on the way out. The XT and XT20 store the data on the tape in normal phase. You can use a XT and XT20 together without the phase issue. Easier to keep the tapes separate.

stupid advancements in tehcnology. Sometimes they make me so mad. Oh well, Ill do some more research on the internet on my computer, then mabye ill email them to myself to further research. :p
