I believe the black one is the Russian version, and the silver is the one made in the USA. Can't comment on the quality, I've only ever used the really old green Russian one.

whats the difference between

and

http://www.music123.com/Electro-Harmonix-Big-Muff-Distortion-Sustainer-i70345.music

are either of them any good? and should i get one for kinda Against me, punk rock distortion?

Being that I haven't listened to punk in a long fucking time, I have no clue who that band is. If they dress like that fag looking emo shit or have the pale white I just saw a ghost and tossed on some black eyeliner look then I really don't care to ever hear them even for shits-n-giggles.

But...

If you want something for soloing then the Big Muff is good. Lots of chords can be good and can be bad. IMO the sound is great. Really great. Just not a full time, your only pedal great.

Having owned both the Russian and the American, I can say that the Russian piece of shit was definatly built by (old surplus) Russian military parts based on the fact that after 6 months of light use it broke. Really shows their military is fucked if push ever comes to shove. Not the best marketing point IMO. (I see they are no longer marketing that angle anymore) ;)

So I had to buy the USA version. Which worked and worked well for about 5 years. I just sold it but it was working like a charm.

For an all purpose distortion pedal, the MXR Distortion+ is great. It doesn't screw up your chords (loose note definition and punch) as much as the BigMuff does.

haha no against me is weird, here listen to them, www.myspace.com/againstme

pretty much like drinking songs.

after you listen to them, any suggestions on pedals?

... and amps if youd be so kind

Well...aside from the low rez bit rate, it sounds too smooth to be a pedal. Probably a tube amp.

But for your attempt at getting that sound, a BigMuff is the wrong direction.

For amps, I would go with a Fender of some sort since you want a nice clean. Since it will be solidstate you will need a good dose of watts to make it useable over a drummer. Look for a used one also because new ain't gonna happen for $200 if you need more than a bedroom practice amp.

Back to pedals. Hit up a store and just start playing them. I still say the Distortion+ is a good one...even after eharing the clip. Its not really dead on or anything, but its about as close as anything will get. Though, believe it or not, a Boss Blues Driver or a TubeScreamer might actually get close to or in the neighborhood of what you are looking for.

hows a princeton chorus? which is like 100 or something watts? my friend has one, ill test it out and see if i wanna buy it. Also the pedal you recommended looks freaking awesome. Ill goto guitar center today too and start playing around with them. Do you know if itll sound good with a fender strat at all? well thanks for everything.

the usa is a great fuzz, the black russian is a crappy distortion. if you can find a green russian one, that's the cat's ass.

I've never heard the expression "cat's ass", but if you mean that it sounds like plugging your keyboard into a cat's ass... hehe ok I'll stop.

I have "access" to a green russian one, and I'm super pleased with it... it can be very warm... You can make anything thin sound rich and saturated and (stupid word of the year: ) analogue-y

But I'm sure it's a preferential thing, and I have specific tastes which you might not like... so listen for yourself as always.-

first off those are both big muff pi's.

I saw against me! a while back and I believe they used marshalls. but i was drinking so who knows.

I personally love my Princeton Chorus, but as to the quality of the distortion, I think it is nice but I am mostly an acoustic player, so I haven't developed quite as discerning a taste as someone that uses distortion more. However, I just got an Ibanez JTK1 and starting playing it through my PC and I think the distortion is nice and warm and has a good tone. The chorus effect is also very nice.
