Hi,
basically, this is the recording equipment I am using at this very moment:
D19 snare mic from the CAD stage 4 pack micing my marshall amp.
The mic is connected to the xenyx x1222USB which is connected to my laptop and I am recording on Ableton live lite 7.
Basically my problem is that there is a very bad sound coming through and I dont know what it is. It kinda comes on and off like a beat but quite slowly, I turned a lot of the stuff down but that didnt change anything. However then I muted "2-TR/usb RTN" slider and it stopped! I got exactly the right sound I wanted so I thought everything was fine....
BUT, when I recorded it on Ableton the noise came back exactly as before and it was absolutely awful.
Any help would be much appreciated :)
thanks

Did you check the microphone and cable on some other unit?

have you tired playing it back on someone elses ableton maybe one of your settings has been messed with ?

The first suspect, in my mind, would be the Xenyx mixer.

The mic is connected to the xenyx x1222USB

Core of your problem, guaranteed. SO many threads along the lines of "I am getting a wierd noise when I record, I am using a xenyx mixer."

And the answer will be a digital earth loop between the laptop and the mixer via the USB cable. Does the noise stop if you run the laptop on battery with the power supply cable disconnected?

This problem is not only Behringer gear I also get it with a Presonus Firebox and my laptop, fixed it with a Behringer HD400 Hum Destroyer (even though it's not a hum) as the HD400 isolates the audio earth and signal connectors.

Okay I think I need to take it back a few steps...do I need to install the Behringer usb ASIO driver to my laptop, if so, how the hell do I do it. There was a software package which came with it which has the driver file on it, how do I install it from there?

If you want the latest drivers go to the behringer website. The ones on the software that came with the mixer might be years old and out of date. I doubt this will solve the noise issue.

Did you try what Witzendoz suggested?
Did you turn off the laptop speakers?
i'm still not convinced this isnt a routing problem on playback.

I tried the laptop on battery life, that didnt do anything.
Wait, let me see, say if you had just bought what I had bought, how would you go around setting it up? bearing in mind my laptop is windows 7

i started out with a xenyx mixer and the crappy seperate two in two out (interface AD/DA) that came with it. I wasnt long before i realised that the mixer was too noisy to get a good sound out of and upgraded to outboard preamps and a pci sound card.
You've been here a while now if you had read the stickys you probably wouldnt have bought the mixer in the first place.
I dont have that mixer or know how its usb configuration works and i dont use windows seven.
Did you :RTFM:

the thing is though, when I unplugged the mic from the mixer it didnt change at all, and it still picked up the sound, just really badly, which would suggest that it is using a built in mic on my laptop..how do I change this on ableton?

Dissable the laptops onboard sound card and use an asio driver.

have you got your new abelton mono track input set to the mixers (usb) output?
Heres something that might help

Ableton Live 8 - Tutorial 2 - YouTube

it takes a while to get used to how daws like abelton work.
i dont use abelton myself i found it hindered my workflow.
theres loads of stuff about abelton on you tube and if you google it you may also find some handy stuff.

I realised the driver on the disc sent were really old which is why they were not working, and ableton had then automatically put it on MME/Directx, which obviously isnt good. so I downloaded the latest ASIO driver from the behringer website and now everything works fine :) and actually I did use a youtube video to help me, before I had seen your comment, but cheers for the help anyway everyone, now I can get messing around with it! :D
