I keep getting shocked by my reel to reel. Im started to get scared of using it ... it has already blown up my little guitar and I have been electrocuted by the damn thing. Stupid consumer "Montclair" reel to reel.
Ah yes, the old Montclair “Composer model.” Beneath its modest exterior lies a complex processor controlled talent plug-in. It will shock the hell out of you if the music is really bad. Just try some chord variations, change some words in the song or tighten up the rhythm. It will stop the shocking if you improve the sound. It’s a great tool for writing once you get the hang of it. But be careful… a model just like the one pictured nearly killed Rupert Holmes back in 1979 as he was putting the finishing touches on “Escape” (The Pina Colada Song). His engineer had to disabled it.
The LEVEL button on the left there adjusts the intensity of the shock down to almost nothing… like touching a 9V battery to the tongue… not so bad. (By the way, don’t touch a new 9V battery to your inner upper lip or you’re eyes will move back and forth really fast and your vision will flash on and off kinda like a strobe. At least it does mine… YMMV).
Wow, does that bring back memories. I bought something very much like that at S. Klein's in Westchester, NY for $30 in about 1967 or so. It had a K00L AM radio attachment that was basically a tunable crystal radio that plugged into the mic jack (clearly an early, though heavy, iPOD). I can honestly say that got me started in home recording!
It wasn't a Montclair but I could almost bet the name started with an "M" too...it's been awhile though.
