If you could only afford to purchase one, which would you choose? I need a kick that will cut, but I need weight too. I know the 91 will catch the attack and snap excellently, but samples I've heard don't have enough boom to them and I'm not sure if I could fix that through placement or if I'd want to EQ it in. The 52 has plenty oomph for me but it's capture of the snap of a beater isn't as accurate.

So I guess I'm asking...Does anyone have experience with these mics separately? I know everyone likes using them together, I can see why, but which is more useful for a modern rock kick tone?

I'm open to considering other kick mics in the 150-200 dollar range...The Audix D6 sounds good but kind of hollow...The D4 sounds much tighter to me.

I'm just looking for some experienced opinions, and I apologize if this has been brought up recently.

Personally, unless you know that it happens to be just the right mic for your stlye and kick drum specifically, I would not make the 91 my primary mic. It rocks as a second mic, but I would go with a standard dynamic kick mic first, then add a 91 to it later when you can afford it.
