4033 on male and female lead. Used on overheads. Used for percussion. Used as horn of the Leslie.

2 mics or 1?

Would I be better off maybe with 2 mics as opposed to 1 good one?
I am thinking one for voc and distance/close miking cabs and the other that can do vocals and acoustic guitar?

The Rode NTK looks like it can do both, tube giving the warmer classic
rock sound, high spl, good freq response. I know only my ears will tell.

Very cool, will do. I have one last question, How would a AT3035 or the AT4040 handle the tasks I have mentioned, I seen the major differences between them and the 4050 is that the 3035 and 4040 are cardioid pattern only...
The major difference is the way they sound, 4050 being smoooooooth and very nice the 4040 being just fine and very even tempered and the 3035 being the least appealing but ustill usable

Get a pair of 4040's or 4033's and start recording

4033's are like Swiss army knifes. They work on just about anything you point them at. Not perfect, but they work.

I am in the same situation as the original poster of this thread. I think I'm going to go to the Guitar center and test the AT 4040 on my voice and an acoustic guitar. Can anyone recomend a good preamp to go with this mic that will not break the bank? Does anyone know if an RNP will make a good pair with the 4040?

One guy told me to try to match the impedance so the preamp is 10x the mic. Is this true and how important is it? Right now my mics and preamps don't match up at all as far as impedance goes and they sound fine to me.

I play classical guitar so if the 4040 works for that as well that would be a bonus. If not, I'll stick to my neumann KM-184, no problem.

Hey There! Yes, I am a newbie and sorry for this question thats probably been asked a million times but there's so much info here it hard to digest it all, so I figure its easier to ask for my specific needs.

I am looking for a a decent large condenser for $500 and under. I am thinking multi pattern to do lead vocals and group harmonies. For the guitar end of things I'll be doing distance miking in conjunction with a SM57 shoved in front of a Marshall Cab, and want to be able to go vice versa just to mix it up.

I would suggest an AT4033, which will leave you with some extra money. It's a good all around mic and holds its own against many of the competitors. Also, the used market might get you into some higher quality mics, if you're open to it.

I would suggest two mics. I think the price range between 0 - $500 has a lot to offer, with some of those close to the $0 side surpassing those on the higher end. I will back-up the ShineyBox ribbon mic idea. On amps, these ribbons really add a magic touch...in my experience the Chinese ribbon has been the path of least resistance (and cost) to good electric guitar sounds. As for the conds. mentioned in this thread, you'd likely be happy with any of them - more a like than they are different. But one of those coupled with a ribbon will give you many sonic possibilities.
