What is this whole Teac - Tascam thing, were Tascam bought over or are they a subsiduary company?

I thought Tascam was a sub of Teac. I'm not sure but either way, Teac needs someone to pee in their butt.

"TASCAM is credited as the company that invented the Portastudio, one of the first affordable multi-track home studio recorders. It is one of four divisions of Teac Corporation, headquartered in Japan."

No, pick up as in "bought".

From a regular music shop as well! :D

TEAC: Tokyo Electro-Acoustic Corporation
TASCAM: TEAC Audio Systems Corporation AMerica

Some people pronounce TEAC like teak, but it's really tee-ack.

The home studio revolution was a joint American/Japanese venture, with major developments coming out of TEAC R&D in California in the 70's.

PS: Dave, the Tascam diety??

Eh,... no thank you.

I am a self stated (*) fanatic and recovering gearslut.

*Tascam, analog, Porta', reel, recording/music gear

Throw in a few Fostexes and a Yamaha in there for good measure, but I'm mainly a Tascam enthusiast.

I'll also agree that the Porta-One and Porta-Two were swell units!!

Ah,... so much gear, and so little time!!;)

For those of you who want a 4-track cassette in a rackmount solution,...

there's the Tascam 234!!

Same vintage and features on standard with the 246. Runs either with a 4-buss mixer on RCA jacks, or with just mics using it's built in 1/4" mic input jacks.

Dave, how do the 234 and 424 MKII compare sound wise?

See the optional foot switch (remote, punch facility) I guess it's just a one pole push to make switch?

The punch-in/out pedal is a single-pole momentary contact switch.

The 234 and 424mkII sound very much the same.

I've not compared the specs on each of those units to the other, but I'd say they're probably virtually the same specs. Any differences in specs would be minimal, if any, but it's probably worth checking, nonetheless.

However, the 234 has a sound quality that seems very slightly better than the 424mkII. Although there's a subjective judgment to any "sound quality", I'd attribute any real differences in sound to be due to the 234's higher quality grade of components, versus the newer 424mkII, which was produced when "cheap" was a design goal that competed with "top quality".

With that being said, both the 234 and 424mkII should have roughly the same sound quality potential, with differences so minimal as to be insignificant,... where the real variance in sound quality depends on the engineer and technique.

If I were to make a quick snap-judgment about the 424mkII and 234, I'd say the 234's sound is ever so slightly better than the 424mkII, but you're then down to splitting hairs on the issue.

Some of the sound potential & resulting sound quality of a recording setup is dictated by type and quality of features,... which almost goes without saying.
