Best Sounding CDs Ever?

I actually pulled out my copy of A Wizard/A True Star a couple of days ago but didn't put it on - wrong company I think. I'll do it today!

One of my all time favourites is :

On an island, by Dave Gilmor

The epitome of smooth sound.

Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker is pretty fucking beautiful too.

Except the fucking tambourine on shakedown. gets me every time.

Jellyfish - Spilt Milk

Talk about dynamic range. There's straight up rock, rock with heavy orchestral arrangements, sparse trios, rich backing vocals and you can hear every part. Better still, it's really great writing.

My favorites in no particular order are:

Tool - Aenima or Lateralis. 10,000 Days would be in that list, if I didn't hear digital clipping in several places. shame really.

Steely Dan - AJA (original EMI CD, not the more recent ones with boosted highs and/or noise reduction! Yuck!) Anybody else notice that the remastered versions of things on the Citizen box set all play sharp?

Jazz: Tim Armacost - Live at Smalls or
Kind of Blue (SACD version)

Roger Waters - Amused to Death

Rush - Signals (remaster). That one makes my best-sounding list, and their album Vapour Trails makes my worst-ever list! Talk about digital clipping and over-limiting!
Opeth - Damnation

Sound Garden - Superunknown.

Radiohead - OK Computer.
Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage

I'm emotionally attached to most of Zappa's vast catalog, but I wish a lot of it sounded better. Dweezil really should remix/master Sheik Yerbouti for example!

I agree with Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker

and I guess I am part of the minority 18 year old group but I'll put my list here anyways.

Relient K - Mhmmm
Just an overall powerfully mastered punk album

Say Anything - Say Anything
Probably some of the best drum recordings ever, So clean!! the guitar tone is legit!

Joshua James - Build Me This
Minimally compressed and smashed, so much so that the soul of the album comes out frequently.

The Who Live At Leeds.
The original 1970 recording.
It is dirty sounding, a little muddy, there are crackles, the guitar and bass are in separate speakers, it is loud as Hell and I love it.
This is how Rock and Roll is meant to sound.

Don't know about the best sounding CD but my vote for the most refreshing would be John Mellencamp's, No Better Then This. In a decade of pre-processed, auto-tuned, overproduced cramp know as commercial music today, this is a breath of fresh air IMO. Back story makes this even more great. Recorded using 1 mic (mono) on a 55 year old Ampex tape machine (Mellencamp bought on e-bay) in 3 historic locations with a world class producer (T-Bone Burnett).

Maybe throw in 'Nebraska' by Bruce Springsteen, the whole thing was recorded on a Tascam 4-Track Cassette Recorder.

Fleet Foxes - Sun Giant EP
Mr. Bungle - California
Kaada - Music for Moviebikers
Neil Young - Tonights the Night (Honey slides and tequila)

Recent (within 10 years): Hourglass: James Taylor
Outside 10 years: Lawyers In Love, Jackson Brown (Russ Kunkel's drums alone are worth the price of admission)
For the hell of it: Killer, Alice Cooper… I just had to…
1 of my fav Live albums: What do you want from Live, The Tubes

... the list goes on....

Reuben - In Nothing we Trust. Great production values

one of the best sounding albums in my opinion, no matter what else comes out, always sounds AMAZING is Army of Anyone (when STP lost Scott Weiland for a bit and got someone else). i think the album is self titled. it is VERY LOUD though. but still i think it sounds great.

did anyone hear the Wild Trapeze by Brandon Boyd??? its an abomination in mastering terms.

Agreed. The guitar and vocals both sound so fresh on it too, and with nothing except a little reverb and the occasional delay. That whole record is detox for the ears.
