Set the gain and drive the same.
I have one and that seems to work for me.
It is not my go-to pre but it gets some use.

I always ran the drive on half way and then used to the gain to dial in the volume I actually need. On a different note...swapping out the tube in it can make a surprising difference. Even though it's still starved plate, the signal still travels through it, and it still counts.

I actually use (and like) two of these - I run mics through them into the mixing board for live sound. I did swap tubes (now have groove's in them), and they sound fantastic. I run the drive at about 11:00, and the gain is just off the zero stop (at 7:00 or 3db of gain) as I don't want to drive the mixer channel's preamp too hard.

Sounds fantastic....don't listen to the naysayers.

The TubePre is a nice low cost device to add warmth to your tracks. I think it's a great DI for Bass. Click Here to hear my example of the TubePre in use. The acoustic guitars and Bass were recorded with tubepre. The piano (which is an outboard Yamaha keyboard) is going directly into a Presonus Firebox (some early piano rhythm takes were done thru an M-Box). Some on this board knocks Presonus.....but they make excellent equipment for the price. Many feel if it's not NEVE or Grace, etc.. that it's not worth recording. Again, some purist knock home recordings and feel everything needs to be done in a formal studio. If the talent is there...the format and equipment will be of second impotance (example: Springsteens NEBRASKA). I would not hesitate to buy more Presonus gear.

Use the drive and the gain equally. Keep them both around 12 O'clock. Increase them both equally if you need more gain, and you will get quite a bit of clean uncolored gain. If you wanted intentional distortion or "color" if you want to call it that in this case, then I guess use more drive than gain. I for one have never wanted to get much "color" from a $100 pre amp, but hey different strokes for different folks. I just want it to make some gain and not influence the sound much if at all.

This may be a dumb question but I am tired of trying to figure it out myself. I am running a rode nt1000 to a tubepre which is connected to a lexicon omega, which in return is connected to my computer, via usb. What do I want the settings on the omega to be set at? I am mostly concerned about the mic 1 setting, the monitor mix, and the output level. Also, given my current set up, what should my gain and drive be set at on the tubpre?

If there's anything in there you don't understand, I'd advise researching (Tweak's, Google, library, whatever) until you do. This is like "day one of school" stuff.

No - I'm not trying to be insulting or anything of that sort - But if you don't have a handle on basic gain staging, you're not going to get a handle on anything else. Now go learn stuff.
