It appears...

MusicMatch v 7 uses Fraunhoffer codecs.

So both Sjoko and Sonusman are correct...

again.... :D

It took me an hour on the internet to find the info but hey - it's worth it.

That is an excellent article!

Is the FhG only available in commercial software? One reason I like CDEX is the price. :) I am using the LAME encoder with CDEX, which this article cites as #2 on the higher bitrates.

Thanks for posting that link! I've forwarded the URL to a couple of buddies already.

Music Match Juke 7 is free and uses Fraunhoffer... (the basic unit)

www.musicmatch.com

I'm sure the MP3 Producer pro and Audioactive Pro versions can do more but MMjuke converts at CBR to 320kbsec and VBR to @244kbsec...

Science dropping...

Guys....

The Fraunhofer codec is indeed only used in commercial programs which is why I personally won't use it. I read articles a while back on how they were trying to rid the world of the other codecs and start charging shitloads of money for not only the codec but for even having material out on the net that used their codec.

If they had it their way, you'd be paying 400 bucks to make MP3s and a few cents per download from your site as well. It is my opinion that these things should be for the people and not subject monopolization.

Some may notice that Fraunhofer is available in shareware progs but only for use with smaller bitrates and whatnot. I use 192 as well...sometimes 160 but never 128....yuck.

That said, programs like CDEX come with ALL the free codecs including LAME and one can use any of them by changing prefs inside the program. (of course, they often do not include fraunhofer because...well...the program would not be free because the software company would have to pay huge licensing fees).

Now for a bit of education/power to the people stuff....have you guys checked out the OGG format?! Most folks agree it's better sounding than MP3 AND it's an open ended technology that will always be free and free from Fraunhofer's scrutiny. The OGG VORBIS codec is support by, I believe, EVERY major prog including CDEX and soudforge's stuff and even winamp. They're also working on some cool stuff for the future of OGG. At least check it out...http://www.vorbis.com/index.psp

I think many of you will find it worth your while:cool:

heylow...

I'll check out the stuff. :) MM Juke IS free and uses fraunhoffer - and encodes / decodes up to 320kbsec and 244kbsec variable....

...so I don't fully understand your position.

Hmmmmm....

MM Juke IS free and uses fraunhoffer - and encodes / decodes up to 320kbsec and 244kbsec variable....

The FREE version will let you encode/decode that high?

If so, then I stand corrected. MM has to pay for it though and I suppose, since it's a popular enough program, matbe MM absorbs the entire cost in the interest of staying popular...I dunno. I dunno.

Is it the ONLY codec MM uses? If so, quite possibly, that's the hitch....an exclusive contractual thing....?

Oh well...from the things I've read on Fraunhofer, they still scare me (not literally...just in a bill gates/monopolizing way) so I avoid them.

Check the OGG thing out anyway...it's interesting and very cool none the less.
