I need a good easy way to record drums, and it seems the recorderman technique is an awesome way to start out. I need to get some good overhead mics, price not being too much of an issue. If someone could give me a list of the best overheads around (obviously in their opinion) I would greatly appreciate it.

Well......LDC would be my choice but some people like SDC what would you prefer for starters?

I tend to prefer LDC's but if you are knowledgeble in both please give me some suggestions on both.

The list will be endless and you will see this as soon as everyone chimes in with what works for them and so forth.
My self I have a vast array of microphones in the studio so when it comes time to do a drum set I can kind of pick and choose till I'm satisfied.
Go to microphones:
Neumann KSM 184 for a pair of SDC

AKG 414 for a pair of LDC

But this can change from session to session.

I use the Studio Projects B1's.
Course, they're the only pair of LDC's I have so....:)

If you can afford them a pair of KM84's would be nice. That's what I use and I love them, plus they are extremely useful for other things.

Some people use U87's too and that would be a good choice.

I have a pair of SM81's too and lots of people have used them for drum overheads but they sound to me kinda cheap. They work well live.

I would pick up the AKG perception series, I can't say enough good things about these mics. They're about $250 to start, they're 20-hz-20KHZ and the frequency graph is pretty flat. It's the best cheap mic that I can think of.
