Bring Back Transfat!
I've been using the Tannoy Reveal passive monitors with a small Samson amp. Nothing to write home about, and I think I'm just tired of looking at them. ;)

I want to try a set of powered units in roughly the same price range ($250 - $500).

Any favorites among the cheaper sets?

I've got a pair of Event PS6 acives for <$300 off ebay. I like them alot.

suprised no one has mentioned the wharfedale 8.2's yet

... i have em :o

I wanted the Mackie 824's but couldn't justify the cost, so I ended up taking a couple of "reference" CD's to the biggest pro audio place around and listening to them all side by side (just about everything but Yorkvilles and Wharfedales). I ended up with the SP 8B boxes from M-audio because I liked the imaging. But honestly, the longer I do this, the more I come to understand that it's really all about learning how any set translates to other environments. With the Mackies, I have to understand that they're "flatter" than most other systems. With the SP 8's, they're brighter in the mids and more controlled in the bass than most (what doesn't phase them can fart out a lot of other speakers). The ones I can't stand - which were most I tried, BTW - are the ones that sound dull, scooped, or listless. YMMV.

FWIW, the biggest monitor upgrade I ever made was room treatment. Good luck.

this made me laugh... love the honesty..."tired of looking at 'em".. hehea

Bx5's and a sub are really nice. I tried some very cool, but hell i couldn't keep em, funding wasn't there. when I hooked up a sub with em, it was like whooaa!!! wht the hell!!! like this really sweet soundwall was turned on.

I'd love to try a pair of Wharfs and Yorks too.
just because of all the millions of threads.

and in the same vein,
it's like looking at something different, or hearing your mixes thru something new and different. rejouvenationally.

.

Wharfs will be arriving in vancouver someday this month.... will soon know if they are actaullly good enough to compare with other mid-low end stuff

coneheads

Wharfs, alright...Passives or Actives?
what are you going to compare 'em to, you said mid low end level?
doh! look forward to the comprendo..

i don't know the Wharfs but a local speaker guy gave me a flyer form the NAMM show. the passive yellow Kevlar cones, Wharfs/Diamond, have like quadruple weave, use UV a&B processing and other things i don't pretend to understand. not sure on the black coned actives, they make all other kinds too.
The passives appear to be more like the KRK V series kevalr weave.
if you look, the KRK RP's kevlar are different than the V series etc...
so maybe the actives are different than the passives.

actives sound great if you get a pair that are built right.
I'd like to try the passives.

Well, given the creative financing (15 payments/no interest) at Same Day Music, I'm bumping my budget just a bit to the $700 range. :p

Now I'm tossing coins between Roland's DS8 and the Alesis Pro Linear 720.

The DS8 is a 120 watt 8" unit with a host of digital inputs.

The 720 uses the same power spread (80 LF/40 HF) with a 7" kevlar driver.
It also has some mickey mouse DSP unit to tailor frequency response to the room it's in. Not sure what that means, but it sure looks cool! :D

Seriously, I've always liked a 6.25 or larger LF driver. They just seem to translate keys and bass better without breaking up or sounding like they're struggling. Power output less than 60/30 has the same effect for me. I'm pretty much into '70s & 80's rock, and I like it loud. Makes sense that the material is sampled at a level close to final listening volume.

My uneducated approach to appreciating/selecting a monitor is that it shoudn't add to, or enhance the signal. But by the same token it shouldn't detract from, or flatten it either. It should just tell you accurately what's on the tape....I mean hard drive. :p

I'm drawn to the Rolands because the thought of running direct from my C-Port to them is kinda exciting. The whole "keep it all in the digital realm" thing.

My only draw to the Alesis is 7 inches of kevlar, 120 watts.....and they look cool. :D

Any thoughts on these choices?

I have a pair of the Roland DS90s (non-digital version) and prefer the Wharfdales to them.
