Check out the Boss NS-2 Noise suppressor pedal. They’re fairly inexpensive and you can even tame the noise on a beast like the Peavey 5150.

behringer snr2000 Denoiser. 'bout $130. Works great.

The SNR2000 is really good; they never updated it to a PRO-version, which is a good thing. It's still the old rugged quality stuff. There's a lot of used ones around, you can usually find a few on ebay. I also own a dedicatded Behringer Guitar Denoiser (made in Germany, not China), but I'm not sure they were sold in the US. It's about 10 years old and uses basically the same technology as the SNR2000 but has a Hi Z input for a guitar or bass. The SNR2000 is made for line signals only.
