Best Hoop for Drum set

All the talk about fixing up kits made me want to change the look of mine.

I decided I'm going to replace all hardware with gun metal black hardware.
I also so some articles on sanding down kits and painting or staining them. (Trying this out on spare drums laying around till i get the hang of it)

My only question is what hoops. I was leaning towards 2.3mm for my toms (13" and 16"). Only reason i thought this is because my black panther snare has it and If its good enough for that then it's good enough for my kit.

But is 2.3mm hoop right for toms or should i look towards die-cast or 2.2mm or 2.0mm

Any help is appreciated!

thanks you guys!

yeah i saw them at drum foundry and drum maker.
I was like 90% positive 2.3 is what i wanted until i realized they were cheaper then die cast. I know price doesn't always matter but it made me second guess myself.

I can't wait to start this project!

triple-flanged versus die-cast comes down to personal preference. Sure the die-casts are more expensive, but they don't necessarily sound better, just different. In my experience, triple-flanged allows the drum to ring a bit more if tuned right. Die-cast is way easier to tune and gives kick ass rim-shots. I can't say i really prefer one or the other.

Take a look at Ego hardware too. Their stuff is really top notch, and I think they'll send it to a powdercoater for you if you want to get any custom colors (but their black chrome is pretty sexy).

Yep, not better or worse, just a different sound. However, anything thinner than 2.3 tends to be harder to tune, as the rim bends with the pressure...

Try going to some of the online drum forums and searching about this, I am sure there's a wealth of info.

Hello

Although I've been playing since I was a kiddo, Ive been building drums the last few years and my latest kit I outftted with wood hoops on all the drums. They are classic style with mini claws(think bass drum) Aside the aesthetic appeal, they offer the overall best(IMO) tone when compared to metal hoops(and a beautiful sidestick to boot!) esp. in the studio, they sing. If you are interested jody @ stellardrum.com is by far the best in the industry. Apart from maybe throwing some oldschool singleflange hoops with hooks on the snare of my next bubinga stave kit, I will NEVER build another drum without wood hoops. They seriously are worth it. Also, good luck with your refinish... I assure you, it will soon become an addiction(this is how I started building). If you are interested in anything related to the subject, and would like some help or anything; I will be more than happy to share indefinitedrums@yahoo.com . Also, my favorite drum builders forum is ghostnote.net ...abundace of anything anyone should know... and alot of great drumporn

as a side note: 2.3 = resonance; diecast = more tight, focused albeit dampened and a bit harder to tune
now that im typing this i realize someones probably said this but my laziness is preventing me from finding and holding the delete key in the dark :)

I mean, would you build a guitar with a metal neck?

PS to all drum builders here... I know you have seniority, and i hope im not stepping on toes here... I really look forward to conversing with you all

I'll second the endorsement for Stellar :).................I've spoken to Jody from my side of the world and you couldn't find a nicer guy, he's also sourced and shipped hardware to me that I can't get here in Aust.,..........he is a true friend.

While GN may be your favourite, it's origins are at http://www.drumshed.org/forum/ ............. there's a wealth of information going way back and it's got the advantages of not having a few of GN's resident redneck fuckwits ;), they followed Edoggy when the forum split..........both are good sites, one just has more stable personalities.

Dude, I hate 4 piece kits. Even worse, I hate wood hoops.

I just have to say: That is one SWEEEEEEET looking kit!!!!!!:)

Actually, I've got a 16x14 to tom to go with it... I just haven't ordered the mount yet... So it is a five piece! And frigging hate wood hoops that have holes in them for the t rods... Only way to go is claws IMO... But its personal pref... Thanks for the kind words man... Oh and gn does have alot of 'fuckwits' but so does every forum right? Ie: the doc :) ds is alright

indef. that kit is very nice!

what about painting or staining woods hoops, i think i would love wood on a snare drum but for some reason i would almost want them black

Almost like the steve gadd snare.

Would i just sand and stain add protective coats or would it be more complicated and not worth it.

Well, jody can do ANYTHING you could imagine with finishes and/or inlays of various woods, but I got mine unfinished and applied the same finish as my shells.... it is just as easy to finish/stain them as the drums(prob more easier for you, as they would come bare and you have to take the finish off your drumset) esp if you want black b/c you wont have to match it up with the diff woods as in if you were going natural.
I dont quite remember if you stated this, but what type of wood are your shells? Jody can most likely match the two types, even though your 'better' woods (maple, bubinga ect) would sound better(theoretically).
the hoops for my next kit will be bubinga with an inlay of maple around the middle of the outer ply, and a center ply of maple also... beautiful!
really if you get the chance, try out some toms with the wood hoops... they really make the difference(not really so much the ones w/o claws IMO).
thanks for the compliment as well
Beau
