well, we've seen a lotta really good names here...
but will no one mention Robert Fripp's "Heartbeat" solo??? or any other solo of his????
i did notice a general uneasiness over the term "progressive", but, was it not
Led Zepplin
Black Sabbath
Yes
& King Crimson who shaped that term?
Probably most bands/ musicians that are spoken of today as progressive are imposters. I still listen to all my king crimson albums & they are still doing it 32 years later! just as wild and unrestrained

here, here!! Is that Fripp or Belew on Heartbeat? One thing I came to realize after seeing them of couple of times, is a lot of the guitar stuff I though was Fripp was actually Belew. But then again it was probably Fripp who influenced Belew's playing. What a great duo!!!

Another cool solo is the Elephant Talk solo. That's Belew

frippertronics

i think the solo is actually a trading back and forth on heartbeat-
i can't believe i've never had the opportunity to see them-
it must be "a sight you're unlikely to see anywhere else on the planet" :D
i looked @ their website and there is no dates listed-
heard any of the "projekt" stuff? awesome

Hey, I'm really pleased to see Fripp and Belew mentioned. I would have, except I couldn't really think of a particular great guitar solo. When they do improvise, it's so often collective improv; and the parts that stand out in my mind are the written parts -- Fripp's lines in "FraKctured," for example.

I saw them at the Fillmore in San Francisco in October - they were incredible, though I admit I missed Levin and Bruford's presence. The live Heavy ConstruKction three-CD set, from the European tour that precding summer, is great and a real bargain at $20.

OH!!! I ALMOST FORGOT!!!
What about Andy Summers "Driven To Tears" solo???
Definitely Top Shelf!

Yeah Alchuck, even though I consider myself a loyal fan of KC through and through, I found myself not rushing out to get tickets without Levin and Bruford. If I knew what I missed I probably would regret it.
Oddly enough I just got back from the record store and was holding the Heavy Construktion dics in my hands, but opted to get the 24bit 30th anniversery edition of Lizard, and the new Jeff Beck Album. Man speaking of best solos ever. The Beck disc is great!!! I'll have to go back and get the Crimson disc.

Gervis, Yeah the Driven to Tears solo is quite good. As far as Crimson goes when I saw the double trio line up in 95(I think) It was probably one of the best shows I have ever seen. And I have seen some great shows. I was electrified for about a month after that. Infact no other show has done that for me since. Go see them when you get a chance.

Oh and another great Fripp solo is the solo on Exiles on Lark's Tounge in Aspic, and my favorite version is the live version on USA.

I'm back. San Fran is OK but LA is still home. The best burritos up there are at a place called Pancho Villas at 16th and Mission. Go there at 11:30 pm and the line is out the door! Just gotta find parking first.

Opening lick from James Bond theme song. Then the horns kick in and it's all over. The Ventures can do Vegas. (for 5 points, who did play that guitar?)

Eric Johnson's outro on "Zap" (first album) continues to knock me on my butt every time! Soulful, passionate, extremely mean, and get the @#%&@ out of my way!

The solo on The Rolling Stones "Sympathy for the Devil"
And Neil Youngs "down by the river"
All Tone.

split level ranch

Jimmy Page- Fool in the Rain
LOVE THAT OCTAVER!!!

Almost anything by David Gilmour, slow and easy but very very tasty.

Mr. Crowley, Randy Rhoads
Children of the Grave, Randy Rhoads
Painkiller, K.K. Downing/Glen Tipton
Whole Lotta Rosie, Angus Young
Sweet Child O' Mine, Slash
Tornado of Souls, Marty Friedman

John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison's trade-off solos on "The End" from Abbey Road are an alltime favorite of mine.

Favorite solos:

Jerry Cantrell- Man in the Box
Jerry Cantrell- Junkhead
James Hetfield- Nothing Else Matters
Anything Mark Tremonti (*grin*)
Tom Morello-Know Your Enemy

That's it, the modern rock solo kit........

I still like Cinnamon Girl. Hold the "D" for 8 measures.

What happened to TRIX cereal? Just had a bowl. Tastes like poop. When I was a kid TRIX were delicious. Go ahead........say it.....................Silly Rabbit...............Trix are for kids

It seems that all those sugar coated cereals from when we were kids went straight into the pooper. Fruit Loops, Boo Berry, Trix, Lucky Charms. They're not like they use to be. I can't figure out what General Mills did to them. Oh well. Now it's just plain old Wheaties. :D

sugar

hey chris-
the problem with cereals today is, people became sugar concious
sugar corn pops= kellogs corn pops
sugar smacks= honey smacks
super sugar crisp= golden crisp etc. ...
a sad state of affairs when we can't even tell it like it is!!!
i mean, how do we think all those guitarists blazed out those lightning riffs??? with kix in their bellies? come on!

yeah there was nothing like a half a box of Super Sugar Smacks at two in the morning to get you going again.:D

Well we still have Cocoa Crispees. 5 bowls + 7 or 8 cups of coffee = world domination.
